Being this a tech forum and probably a high percentage of forumers living in California, I'd like to ask, what are some of the best things to do in San Fransico/ Bay Area/ NorCal on a Honeymoon? My Fiance aren't the type to lay on a beach and tan all day but we are quite active outdoors during our leasure time. We're planning to go for about a week.

Are there any great places/ areas to stay at? Any must see musuems/local treasures? Any great drives to make? Any great resturants to eat at?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Spend a day in Golden Gate Park. You'll love the Japanese Tea Garden

Bakers Beach and take pictures by the GG bridge.

Stroll by Palace of Fine Arts where The Rock was filmed. The place also connects to the ritzy Marina area where all the rich people live with very pretty villas.

Walk the GG Bridge

sausalito-19.jpg

Visit Sausalito! It's a quaint Riviera-esque town just 15 mins north of SF via the GG bridge. Then you can take the Ferry back to heart of SF. I suggest you rent a bike and do this as a whole-day experience. So much fun! And ferry takes bikes too.

Do the tourist trap at Fisherman's Wharf. Do eat their dungeoness crab. So tasty.

I live in East Coast and visited SF only once. So much fun. Would love to visit again, this time with my gf.

Plenty of hiking. Hike in Muir Woods.

Drive down to Monterey. Enjoy the Aquarium, and maybe take a quick peek into Carmel.

Go to a Giants Game. :)

Museums:
California Academy of Sciences. Awesome.
the De Young.
Walt Disney Family Museum in the Presidio
Asian Art Museum
SF MOMA (Modern Art)

The 2 people above me stated it all. - especially Zeze

You should definitely spend a day out in Napa/Calistoga area. You can wine taste, mud baths, etc. It's pretty cool.

Remember if you are coming in the summer time to dress warmly. It always makes me laugh seeing tourists thinking it is going to be warm in SF in the summer, seeing them walking around in shorts and tank tops freezing their asses off :).

well, you won't be laying on any beaches and tanning here in NorCal anyway--as it gets kinda chilly.

This is probably the perfect for you guys anyway, if you are the outdoorsy type.

just outside of SF, across the GG bridge--Muir Woods, Mt Tam, Pt Reyes. Pt Reyes probably takes a day to explore, Mt Tam is a lovely hike and everyone needs to see Muir Woods. Pt Reyes is simply amazing--it's like a local Big Sur, with spectacular beaches, elephant seals, whale migration, and there's even a herd of Reindeer wandering around out there. Nice lttle community on the way up there, too. Idyllic setting for honeymooning. (avoid the little Czech restaurant, though. It's cute--but way overpriced for extremely mediocre food)

Spend a day (or two) and drive up to Napa and Sonoma.

Spend a day driving down to Big Sur (Monterey and maybe Half Moon Beach on your way down).

There's also super awesome hiking/camping in Big Sur, with some nice hotsprings that frequent nekkid shenanigans. I think you might have to reserve some time, though.

I think you could spend the week at those places and be quite satisfied.

and yes, this all requires a car.

There are plenty of great restaurants--it's freaking San Francisco! The prototypical "Best Restaurant" in the USA is the French Laundry in Napa. In fact, go to Napa to eat. Mustard's Grill is spectacular, as well.

Cal Academy has Thursday night, 21-and-over only evenings (I think this is only once/month, though?) It's about $10 entrance, and they sell mixed drinks throughout the museum as you wonder around. Exhibits close on a rotating schedule, though--so you kinda want to get there early so you don't miss out on some that close well before the museum closes.

Drive down the pacific coast highway through Big Sur.

Stay in Carmel or Monterrey. Make your way through Bakersfield back to the interstate and back up if'n ur pressed for time. Else drive back UP the PCH.

San Fran has to be at the bottom of the list of places to go for a honeymoon.
There's a lot to like about SF, but IMO, it's a terrible place to honeymoon.

It's a fine base to explore everything else. The Bay Area is effing gorgeous. I'm constantly getting LivingSocial deals for B&B weekends in Sonoma, which would be perfect.

OP, consider registering a LivingSocial account with a Bay Area zipcode (try 94703 or 94720) and look for good weekend getaway deals. I've noticed at least one of these per week. It's free, so...why not?

Also agree with MotionMan. Alcatraz is an awesome tour.

Thanks OP and everybody else who has contributed to the thread. I'll be in East Bay this summer time for an internship, but this thread has given me some good ideas for sight seeing stuff that would be worth a trip to the city.

The one thing I plan on visiting while I'm out there is the SF Armory.

PS. I am actually getting married out at the Meadow Club Golf Course next June. So there is stuff to do in the SF area.

Rent bikes and bike across the Golden Gate to Sausalito, there you can check out the town and then take the boat back to San Francisco.
