Vermont, baby. The summers are great, Burlington is actually halfway decent during the summer and the atmosphere is laid back enough that all you'll want to do is lay around and make love.

Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, or Nantucket.

I'm from the Cape, and can help with specific if desired.

Some details: Looking to spend a few thousand total. Probably going to drive there to save money and for convenience. She loves the beach, so there needs to be some water around. We like historical attractions, natural attractions, museums, light hiking, etc. Would like to get a cottage if possible. Driving distance to several casual and fine dining restaurants is also a plus. Would be nice if we could drive into one of the big historic cities for a day trip (ex. Boston).

A few thousand total may be tough. It's prime summer season and a cottage on the Cape or Islands for a week will cost you a thousand or more.

Mass - Cape, Nantucket/Martha's Vineyard, Boston, Marblehead, Rockport

Maine - Camden or Bar Harbor would be great places but you're far from a big city.

Vermont - Burlington is nice and you're not far from Montreal

Rhode Island - Newport is beautiful and you're not far from Boston

I know of a nice Bed & Breakfast in Rhode Island. From there you can access Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine, etc. We rented a cabin in Vermont for our honeymoon. It was awesome because (1) the Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream factory is there and (2) if you like food, Vermont is awesome! They have farms EVERYWHERE where you can get the most amazing maple syrup you'll ever taste, maple candy, fresh meats like farm-fresh ham, etc. Kenny Bunkport in Maine is also a nice place to stay,I've heard. Maine is nice, but even in the summer the ocean is numbingly cold. If you like lobster though, you have to go there. Also there are a lot of nice "quaint" town areas if you wife-to-be enjoys shopping. In Connecticut, there's Mystic Seaport. In Massachusetts, there's Old Sturbridge Village. HTH :)

Search for something on Prudence Island it's much cheaper.

if you want to do boston, I think there is a boat that takes you to capecod. never been on it my self, but it beats fighting traffic if it does exist.

You want Mass.

You can pick a place halfway between Boston and Portsmouth and still have the Cape as a viable driving option. Plan ahead because traffic is a nine headed whore bitch on the weekends.

2 hour express ferry exists and isn't a bad ride.

Try:
- Boothbay, Maine
- Bar Harbor, Maine
- Lake George, New York. Not in NE, but it's one of the most beautiful lakes in the country IMO. It's also the site of Fort Ticonderoga which is pretty fun when they have reenactments.
- Obviously Cape Cod, but it's pretty busy during the summer and overcrowded.

Both Boothbay and Bar Harbor are gorgeous, but they're far from Boston (5+ hours).
