The fiance and I just had a really bad experience at a travel agent trying to narrow our honeymoon options. I'm turning here for ideas.

What did you do on your honeymoon? Where did you go? What time of year? Approx cost? Would you do it again? What do you wish you did instead?

We are looking for something that's all inclusive preferably but we are also going in early July. Our budget is between 5000 and 6000 (Canadian, so 5500ish usd) for everything.

Thanks!

As someone who has been married for 21 years, I'd advise canceling it!

Just kidding. I think.

Anyway, for that budget you should be able to have a pretty good time almost anywhere. My wife and I didn't make any formal plans except for airline tickets to Zurich and a rental Fiat. We didn't even have a hotel for the first night. Spent two weeks wandering through Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Austria, and Lichtenstein. Well, Lichtenstein was only an hour. The rest took two weeks.

Wife and I went to Couples Swept Away in Negril Jamaica in October. Was a great time and only rained a little bit both the day we got there (stopped by the time we were checked in) and one other morning. Otherwise, perfect weather. We would definitely go back as there as plenty to do both on and off the resort. Have to be careful when you are off the resort though.

Bahamas - Sandals Resort. If you like to eat / drink a lot an all inclusive is great.

You neglected to tell us your interests and planned trip duration, so I presume you're just looking for examples of what others did. We did Costa Rica for ours. Airfare was pretty reasonable and we enjoyed a fairly active honeymoon in terms of activities and sightseeing. You can enjoy plenty of sexytimes without needing to lock yourselves into the cramped cabin of some nondescript cookie-cutter Caribbean all-inclusive resort place.

Couple were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.
Guy asks the husband how they made it last.
Husband says, "On our 1st wedding anniversary, I took my bride to Italy. I went and picked her up last week."

I'll be here all week.

Thailand! Beautiful, cheap, and exotic!

Just stay away from Bangkok.

or... Philippines. My buddy took his wife there a few weeks ago. He had chickens running around his motel.

Yeah I just want to know what other people do. I'm not necessarily looking for specific suggestions. I just included some thoughts on our current parameters for interest sake.

I'd look for a smaller resort - under 200 rooms that is adults only. Smaller resorts will have better service, less rushed, more relaxing, easier to get reservations and the like.

Playa Del Carmen or Puerto Morelos on the Carribean side near Cancun - lots of activites to do as well from jungle adventures, Cenote swimming & exploring, Scuba & Snorkel, Mayan Ruins, sport fishing.

If you are on the Western side of Canada might be easier to go to Los Cabos - hot, but a dry desert head with beautiful beaches and a laid back feel to the whole area.

We are big fans of Mexico as you get a lot for your dollar vacation wise.

We've heard great things about the US=VI, Turks & Caicos, Barbados, Trinidad. I'd avoid the DR & Jamaica personally.

My wife and I went to Couples Sans Souci in early July. It was great. All we did was float around in the pools or the Caribbean drinking rum punch and pina coladas without a care in the world. It was hot and humid (being early July), but the rooms were air conditioned and the water was pleasant. And being an all-inclusive resort, the drinks and food were free. It was... just incredible. I would highly recommend it. It's the second best place I've ever been behind the Galapagos, and the Galapagos would be a shitty honeymoon.

Another thing I'd recommend; you don't have to spend your entire budget. Sure, a $6,000 trip is going to be awesome, but a $4,000 trip is going to be awesome too and you'll have a little bit more towards a down payment on a house. Don't skimp out completely - you only have one chance at a honeymoon - but don't go completely overboard just because you have the funds. It's a honeymoon; you're probably going to spend a fair amount of it rolling around naked, and you don't need to be in Bora Bora to have fun doing that.

I think we stayed at Dreams resort.

If you like sitting on the beach 8 hours a day, eating and drinking whenever you want, beautiful weather and beaches, I would recommend it.

Swim up rooms are pretty cool. Hop out your back door into the pool. You could swim through the whole resort with multiple swim up bars. :)

We spent a week in France and another week in Italy and had a great time. You can probably do it with your current budget, but you may need to expand it a little.

I think some people put too much into honeymoons. Of course I could just be jealous because we got married young and were quite poor so our honeymoon was one night in the Amway Grand hotel before heading home but there seems to be more and more pressure to take 'exotic' or expensive honeymoons and I think that gets away from the point - which is to spent some quality time with your new spouse.

If I had it all to do over again it would be nice to have had more time on our actual honeymoon but we would rather take two $2500 trips (the second probably being the 1yr anniversary) than 1 $5000 trip. I think - very generally speaking - a less active sightseeing honeymoon would be good for most people since, hopefully, you'll be spending a lot of time in the bedroom rather than out and about sight seeing. Highly couple dependent though

Its a bit tough to give specific recommendations without knowing your location (which factors very heavily in flight costs) but you might want to look into some place in the Caribbean. We went to Punta Cana for 4 nights in January and I think it cost us less than $2k for flight from DTW+all inclusive accommodations. I know Punta Cana is quite popular for Canadians (When I noted this to someone working at the resort they laughed and said they called it Punta Canada because there were so many Canadians that go there on vacation). A quick look at Air Canada shows tickets for 2 for ~1200CAD RT from a couple of places in eastern Canada (Toronto, Montreal). Given what our nights cost you could get 5 nights and be around 2500CAD or stay a bit farther from the beach (but same property) and get 6-7 nights in an all inclusive resort

Iceland air has been running some pretty cheap airfare sales to Iceland from eastern Canada and that could be a nice change up. They also have a 'stop over' option if you want to continue on to Europe.

If you are on the western side maybe Hawaii or the Cook Islands\Samoa\Fiji but that gets more expensive

Well, Lichtenstein was only an hour. The rest took two weeks.

:awe:
Wait - I missed Lichtenstein?
Yeah, you blinked. Sorry

If you're having a big wedding, I recommend waiting a week before going on your honeymoon if you have the option. When I booked our honeymoon, it worked out that I got airfare comped for one of us using skymiles and ended up saving more money on lodging because we waited a week...it turned out to be the best decision we made. Having a week to decompress after seeing all our family and get all the paperwork stuff out of the way was worth a lot. Consider it if you have a choice to slow things down right off the bat. We ended up going to a small resort/B&B within driving distance for our wedding night and then a week later flew out.

We did Hawaii for our honeymoon. We didn't worry about safety much because we never left our 1st world country. We hit Kawaui for a week and a few nights in Waikiki before flying back. There was plenty to see and do on the islands and the cost wasn't that high.

That's not all inclusive, but you get to explore all the cool eateries. We found that Hawaii was really good for Sushi, grilled fish, and of course we did a Luau one night....like a dinner show.

For all inclusive, we've done Cancun before. It's not the best honeymoon spot though....but neither is the Dominican Republic or other all-inclusive resorts unless you're doing Sandals or something cheesy. I don't like those places for honeymoon because I like to explore where I'm going and get a variety of local food. To each his own though... Enjoy whatever you do!
