Looks like GM, Ford and Chrysler will have to continue their 0% incentives to keep up.

Toyota Sales
Honda Sales
how the other manufacturers did in August

The Honda Accord also shattered all times sales records. Lot's of people are probably snapping up all those loss leader Accords. :)
August 2002 sales:
Honda Accord - 48,269 (up 21%)
Toyota Camry - 45,442 (up 27%)
Ford Taurus - 32,827 (up 17.6%)
Nissan Altima - 19,625 (up 96.7%)

Best Selling Car Title Race (YTD)
1. Toyota Camry - 309,618
2. Honda Accord - 271,024
3. Ford Taurus - 227,704

The '03 Accord will have lot's of catching up to do.

The Nissan Altima is on fiyah but it still has a ways to go.

I'll tell ya Honda Accord's are selling like crazy, I have helped over 20 people locally buy new Honda Accord LX automatics for $15,444 out the door! Most the Honda dealerships we visit are OUT OF STOCK on LX's only have DX, VP and EX's left. A few SE's are here and there.

Wow..that's cool! So did you accompany all 20 people to the dealerships? I don't think I can handle dealing with the dealership that many times in such a short period of time. :)

Did you get any sort of kickbacks from the dealer? A couple dealers around here will give you $50-$100 in cash for every person you refer their way.

Why do I have the sneaking suspicion that Honda will have drastically reduced profits this year?? They are basically giving away Accords to retain the #1 sales lead. However, Toyota doesn't give rebates or lowball on their Camry. The base price of a Camry is around $19,700 with the average Camry going out the door for around $21,000 - $22,000.

If they were ugly, they wouldn't sell (Pontiac Aztek, Isuzu Axiom). Camrys are just made to look SO plain that they can't possibly offend NE1 one way or the other (although the current styling is a "bit" sportier than before). Couple that with Toyota's reputation and they sell like hot cakes.

prontospyder - Are you kidding? I couldn't handle dealing with car dealers on 20 transactions within a month. I accompanied a few to help them buy a new car, if they weren't a close friend/co-worker I charged them an undisclosed fee for my "services" (which is a joke if you think about it, loss leaders are so easy if you understand the basic concept, what to ask for, what to demand, what to say, etc.). Those I didn't accompany I showed them what a loss leader ad looked like and coached them on what to do. Most of them bought a loss leader car successfully, a few were talked into paying close to sticker, extended warranties, etc.

vi_edit - I wish. Dealers do offer referrals but only if you refer someone who pays close to sticker (e.g. NOT a loss leader ad price). The dealers barely put up with me only because I'm giving them free sales.

I think Honda is using the fat profits from the Odyssey, Pilot, and MDX (which sell at or above MSRP) to make up for the losses. They're also counting on the '03 Accord to sell at MSRP which I doubt will happen for long due to intense competition (Camry, Altima, 6).

I've already taught you people how to fish, use the search feature ... search in the Hot Deals and Off Topic forums for posts by RossMAN mentioning loss leader in the body of the thread or just click
here.

Heh, this is in Oregon...

Tax: $0 :Q
Title & License: $42.50 for 2 years
plus $35 "administrative fee" for the dealer to do the paperwork

License renewals are $30 every 2 years plus ~$20 for smog

edit: I've been thinking about this Accord deals too... I could trade in my paid-off 4.5 year old Acura w/70k miles straight across for a brand-new Accord... the mind boggles

Portland, Oregon where we have ZERO SALES TAX and apparently AWESOME deals on new cars and I mean AWESOME!

The 2002 Honda Accord LX automatic price of $15,444 includes the $495 destination fee, the title/license/administrative fees are an extra $113 though.

PSYWVic - If you can get a sweet deal on a 2002 LX then do it, otherwise I'd get a 2003. Where abouts in Portland do you live?

If they would only produce a list that stripped out fleet and commercial sales. IOW, just individual "walk-up" purchases.
