Seems this is a common trend. All the models that people used to call "subcompact" have been replaced by larger and larger (and more expensive) versions, so now the Civic/Sentra/Focus etc. segment isn't really THAT small or cheap anymore.

That has opened up the very bottom of the size chart for a new subcompact segment. Korea jumped in to fill the void, but now the Japanese and domestics seem more intent on fighting back.

Looks ok considering the pricepoint. It's less unusual looking than the Scion, so it will probably appeal to more people.

Yeah the scion is more expensive, though it would be neat to see how much this costs as a "real" barebones car. Ie, I see a lot of cars that don't even have AC standard - like the accord DX. Nobody in their right mind would buy a new car without AC if they lived south of northern alaska, so if this car is really $10k+ you need AC, well there goes a thousand there. If they can keep it for $11-12k tops and be worth owning it could be pretty cool. Definitely more attractive than a Kia, but then again so is my anus.

IMHO too small, especially with all the giant SUVs rolling around (and over) in the snow up here in MI.

Best Motoring had a slightly tuned one... that thing sounds awesome even if it was slow as hell. :)

I came into the thread intending to say just that. With the huge success of Scion in California and Chevy bringing out the Aveo, should it really be any surprise? With the compacts moving upmarket, it was only a matter of time before there was enough room to fit a subcompact underneath. With rumours of the Honda Fit and hopefully Mazda2 or MX-Micro being released in the US, this segment is getting some competition from quality manufacturers. I would buy a Scion or Honda long before a Kia

Are you kidding - the Echo Hatchback just screams CHEAP! It's just a dumpy looking vehicle. At least the Fit has vell defined lines, and doesn't look like an econocar :pO

Sorry, but do you want a cute/dumpy/generic looking vehicle, or one that sharp, crisp, and clean lines? Not to mention the interior of the Fit blows away the Vitz - there's not even a comparison.

I don't know if I'd use the words sharp, crisp and clean to describe the Fit.

I guess beauty really is in the eye of the beerholder.
