Honda to add Pilot sport-utility in U.S. next year

Is this another Meg Ryan thread? 😉

I guess Honda needs more SUVs, since they only have 3 right now including the MDX yet Toyota has 7 including Lexus models.

<< eh, i dunno, honda's suv's are kinda small. the inside of that crv is like the inside of a sedan! >>

Umm, the CRV is small...the Passport is not. I don't see your point? Anyway, the Pilot will be larger than the Passport.

<< GOD I HATE SUVS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >>

See original post. GO HOME!!!

<<The Passport, a midsize sport-utility built for Honda by Isuzu Motors Ltd., will be dropped from the company's lineup after the current model year, Matsuno said.>>

Great, Honda's getting rid of its only actual truck based SUV in favor of a station wagon on stilts. I think the Pilot looks cool, but I don't think Honda should get rid of the only truck-based vehicle they offer. I have nothing at all against SUV's, people can spend their money however they want, I just wanted to point out that I think Honda needs to have at least one SUV that's truck based to compete with the 4-Runner/Land Cruiser.

AAHH! First the infiniti, now Honda is getting another SUV! Ah, I can't wait to see real pictures of it! 🙂

Here's my take. If yo a$$ ain't bringin' the $$$ home, get the *^@# out of my house!!!! 😀

The Passport is selling about as fast as Aztecs at a $1 sale. Must SUV's are going to a car-based unibody b/c they are stiffer, less prone to creaks/squeaks, ride better, weigh less, and add to the companies bottom line. People are sapping them up like crazy. The Highlander is KILLING the 4-Runner in sales even though they are about the same size and price. And guess which one is "truck-based" 😉

You go with what sells.

Zenmervolt, I think it's probably more cost-effective for Toyota (and Nissan) to have truck-based SUVs because they actually sell trucks in the U.S.
The Passport was truck-based but I am guessing Honda was able to defray their development and production costs because of the platform-sharing with Isuzu.

If they are going to keep trotting out SUVs without actually selling any trucks, it probably makes more sense financially to have them be car-based. That seems to be the trend anyways.

<< I heard it's gonna be a 7 or 8 passenger SUV....

They're gonna have great success with this car, just like the Odyssey
>>

Yep, and b/c it's a Honda it equals INSTANT sales 🙂 The only reason why the Passport didn't sell is b/c it IS NOT a Honda.

I know, but I still think they should have at least one SUV that's truck-based and more off-roadable, if only to show that they can. And I do like car-based SUV's, they have a lot of virtues in inclement weather, plus they don't consume as much gas as truck based SUV's. I'm the last guy to be bashing SUV's, I like my dad's Explorer V8 way too much to do that. 🙂

bigsmooth, great point about Honda not having a truck to base the SUV's off of. It's one of those things I knew, but hadn't thought about. I'd love to see some Honda trucks someday though. Given Honda's engineering abilities, I have little doubt that Honda trucks would do well.

Zenmervolt: if they ever decide that they do need to offer a truck-based SUV (i.e. body-on-frame), I have no doubt they would also offer a pickup.

In my experience, a lot of the older folks who buy Camrys and Accords (and Buicks etc.) also have a pickup. I bet Honda could sell ton of 'em.

That would be so fuggin' awesome. The Tundra and a Honda pickup taking on the best of the US. HAHAHA, I love it 😀

Toyota has already bitch slapped Chrysler out of 3rd in US sales. Next stop, FORD! 😀

hey NFS4.. you probably know about this.. do you know if Porsche is coming out w/ an SUV sometime in the near future.. i heard something about that.. but wasnt sure....

Yeah, the Cayenne with a 450HP bi-turbo V8 will be out next year.

<< I hope the thing is gonna have some balls under the hood... Otherwise it looks good to me. >>

It should have the MDX's 240HP, 3.5 liter V6...BITCHIN' 😀

<< I hope the thing is gonna have some balls under the hood... Otherwise it looks good to me. >>

It will probably share Odyssey's 3.5L V6, which is good for 240hp/242ft-lbs. It almost certainly will not have a V8. Has Honda ever built a V8? a V8 would go against their reputation of having low-displacement, high-revving engines and I don't think a truck offering is going to change that.

I think that Honda built a V8 for CART.
