Honda S2000 vs Mustang GT vs Crown Victoria

Crap I wish I could go to that police auction and get me a cheap S2000. I wanted to say "sucks for that guy" but it's hard to feel sorry for an idiot 🙂

Only run if you're on a sportbike & can get far enough away to make it worthwhile.

5 blocks away just doesn't cut it.

I MIGHT consider it on HWY 26 here in Oregon, but other than that running is beyond stupid.

Thing is I think a lot of people in his situation may have tried that. S2000 with a 100 mph head start. That cop nailed him pretty good but I'm fairly surprised.

That lead only does you good if you keep it up & get the f*** out of the immediate area.

He stopped within WALKING distance.

Wtf? Trying to outrun the cops? I didn' t know people did that in real life.

They do, I knew someone who tried it on a sportbike. Problem was he wasn't in an area to really outrun anybody, & got hung up in some bushes when he tried to ride through a divider between two businesses. He was a dumbass anyway though, so it doesn't surprise me.

Umm... yeah. Did a few times a long time ago(according to ohtwell and aves_2k it was NOT a long time ago). 😉

Amazingly stupid. AMAZINGLY. Even if you could outrun the Crown Vic (which actually is reasonably good at high speeds--the weight isn't as much of an issue anymore)..... its VERY difficult to outrun a Motorola. The speed of light is pretty fast.

Note the "There is a chance I'll do time and have a felony on my record...."... all because he was too stupid to take a speeding ticket. :-/ Geez.

Care to explain to me how weight and drag would no longer be a factor at higher speeds?

It would have been a lot more than a speeding ticket.

Probably reckless driving and speed contest too.

It would have been serious either way, but he gambled and lost.

The chopper MUST have seen him and just radioed... there was no way the cop just found him. I think that if he kept going the likely hood of passing another cop would have been very high.. obviously all units were en-route, so I think staying in the general vicinity was his best bet.

Too bad.

I agree with his actions...RUN! If you have that much of a jump then get the hell outta dodge and get off the road.

Yeah it would have been pretty bad. Obviously not as bad as evading the police on top of everything but pretty bad...

He had a good setup for it. If you're going against the direction of a cop and you're in a fast car at night with a high rate of speed the odds are well in your favor.

At speeds above 100mph, weight is less than 5% of the resistance. Drag is 95% of the resistance (note I never said drag in the first post)--recall that wind resistance is a function of speed cubed.

Also, a modern Crown Vic is probably about as efficent as a S2000. Convertibles are notorious drag producers--cars with hardtop versions are always faster in hardtop form (top speed-wise). If I remember correctly, the police package Crown Vics will pretty easily hit 130.... while the S2000 might hit 150 or so. Its a slight advantage, but it can easily be addressed by the fact that the cop just has to follow--and the leader has to put up with all the unexpected things (curves that weren't know about, etc).

Oh, I agree with you Viper GTS.... I just think its a bad gamble. I mean, he doesn't even have to CATCH him--just getting his license plate is enough (because evading arrest a felony, they can just arrest you later....). And its just difficult to outrun someone who knows where they're going (I assume the cop was familiar with the area).

Not to mention, I think street racing is completely moronic--track time isn't THAT expensive, if you want to really RACE (and yes, I did this for awhile). Too many people are endangered when you race on the street.... people should really keep it to the track.

Yeah, if you're gonna get a traffic ticket, you might as well endanger others' lives and face felony charges at the same time. Who wouldn't?

You risk a lot when you decide to run. I would have pulled over. Being outright honest with a cop is more likely for you to get out of trouble than trying to run.

That idiot had no chance. If the patrol car was like on another artillery altogether and had to make a few turns first then he might of had a chance. Maybe with a F40 or a sportsbike instead. 😀
