I'm thinking about picking up one of these used for my daily commutes around campus. I live in a pretty hilly neighborhood..so it would definitely help me out. This past year I've had terrible luck with bikes and I'm ready to try something new. These Honda Ruckus scooters look really cool and definitely would help me get around better. I'd rather not consider using a motorcycle due to the cost of insurance, extra fees for motorcycle classes, and all the safety gear I'd need (plus it gives my mom piece of mind to let her know I drive a scooter rather than a motorcycle haha :) )

Anyone had any experience with these?

Well, I had a few friends that rode something similar. Great way to make sure you never get laid.

Yeah I totally forgot that what I drive has a direct correlation to how much I get laid.

I've considered getting a scooter (one that's less than 50cc's) because of cost - in TX you don't need insurance or the license for it due to the size. I'm fairly light, so I wouldn't be topped out and could travel the regular roads to work ... plus, parking would be pretty easy - I hate having to pay for it.

I just talked to a guy from a local Honda dealership about what the legal requirements are in CA. I first thought that you didn't need insurance, but he said I would. However it's only like 80 bucks a year (which is pretty reasonable imo).

In CA you need at least an M2 license. For the full license you need to take a motorcycle course (I think only if you're under 21), however you can also just get a permit (that has to be renewed every year) by simply passing a written test.

The laws were only made about 2 years ago or so, and are hardly enforced seeing as that it's pretty unusual for someone to be speeding on a scooter haha.

Get yourself a sued scooter, they depreciate so damn quick.

Plus, I would advise to get something a bit larger and a bit more comfortable like a 2005 Piaggio BV200 so that you can truly use it.

I'm guessing by sued you mean used? Yes I'm most likely going to get it used. However I'm definitely not spending any more than $2000 so that Piaggio is out of the question. Plus, the Ruckus has pretty much everything I could want. I really don't need to be going over 35mph where I live.
