My 98 Honda Accord V6 threw a CEL and looks like the cat need replacing. I checked the dealer for part only and they tell me it's $1068. Are they kidding? That's like half what the car is worth to me (it's got 152k miles and the weather/wear has not been kind). I checked aftermarket and it's about $175. Choice is obvious but why such a large price difference? I hope to run this car for another 2 yrs or so or when the oem trans give out which could be soon. That's a $2k+ job that isn't gonna happen.

The OEM cat has to last for as long as the emissions warranty, thus it probably has more of the precious metal catalysts in it to allow for acceptable performance even after years of slowly being poisoned. For a car that's not going to have to last more than another 4-5 years, I don't think it's a big deal though as long as the aftermarket cat passes emissions tests.
