Honda leads Formula One?s green revolution

I'm not sure what I think of this from an aesthetic standpoint, but on balance I applaud Honda for doing something different.

Here is the car.

Here is the story:

The Honda Racing F1 Team today announced a major new initiative for the 2007 Formula 1 season. To help raise awareness of the environmental issues facing the planet, the RA107 F1 car will simply feature a huge image of earth, in place of the advertising and sponsor logos which have featured and dominated all other F1 cars for decades.

The car?s new look is a powerful call to action for fans, sponsors, customers and members of the public to join Honda?s commitment to help address the environmental issues facing the world.

Via the websitewww.myearthdream.com, anyone who wishes, will have the opportunity to have their name on the car, make a pledge to make a lifestyle change to improve the environment and make a donation to an environmental charity. Under the concept of ?our car is your car?, each name will form a tiny individual pixel which will help build the image of planet earth on the car. Each name will be visible on the website when you make the pledge or under a microscope on the car.

How ironic that on a car with no emissions controls, in a sport based on burning fossil fuels for pleasure, watched by fans who enjoy automobiles with insane HP and low mileage.... they promote environmentalism....

Granted, of any car company, i would vote Honda to bear that flag, i just thought it was funny

Yeah, tough to disagree there's some hypocrisy here, though in all fairness many of Honda's fuel-economy innovations, like VTEC, were developed for F1.

Who cares? Honda can't win a race in F1, so they need to get attention this way. IMO it should be negative attention in a sport that promotes burning fossil fuels.

You know i was just thinking that... An F1 car promoting awareness of environmental issues... They are the worst for it, get through so much rubber per race, so much metal for new engines every race weekend. so much petrol... I Could go on! 😕

Actually Jenson Button won in Hungary last year, and they had a great latter half of the 2006 season.

While improved I would not call it great, although I believe they got point finishes in the last third of the season. Still...

God damn hippies.

On a side note I love F1 racing and think it much better than that damned Nascar. At least F1 has one car with an Earth on it.

EDIT: I actually looked at a picture of the car and it is pretty cool.

4th place in constructor's points, out of 11 teams, isn't TOO bad.

I love F1 too.... but glaring hypocrisy is hard to overlook. It'd be kinda like wal mart promoting small business haha

More hypocrisy in the world? Whoaaaa, you guys think we're on to something here?
After that sarcastic remark, I must say that the world is full of hypocrisy, we just gotta learn to lower our standards greatly and appreciate the least hypocritical group. Not fair but it's how it works.

I can't belive how much you guys have bought into how the environmental movement has forced people into feeling guilty for things that don't actually hurt the environment. F1 does very little polluting - all of the cars run over the entire season use less fuel than a single trans-continental plane flight.

Conserving fuel and energy is well and good, and if Honda wants to use this as a publicity stunt than that's fine as well. But a multi-billion dollar company that sells Ridgeline trucks by the tens of thousands isn't helping conerve anything by painting the car different. If Honda really wanted to make an impact (though an incredibly small one) they should de-tune their cars to make only 200 horsepower, and call it a reasonable number. Of course they would get lapped immediately, but they would have their statement. Of course, they won't do that, because people wouldn't watch them. Honda doesn't need the money, so they've found the perfect way to get coverage of their car withough having to be competitive on track.

Honda is pos. Years ago they came up with the CVCC engine and told the feds they could meet the upcoming smog requirements with no problem. The feds then implemented tough standards that the other companies had to scramble to catch up with.
Honda had a market advantage and pushed it.
Then Honda told regulators that it could meet proposed standards for motorcycles with no problem, again putting other manufacturers at a disadvantage, scrambling to meet the new standards. Does anyone believe that smog limits on motorcycles have made any significant difference in air quality?
Next Honda did the same for jetskis, then lawnmowers, next is snowmobiles?
Honda doesn't care about the environment, they are just trying to screw their competitors.
Notice that new Hondas get much lower mileage than older models.
End of rant.

waaaaaah

Doesn't matter what the car looks like - they've been sucking horribly in preseason testing. I mean really bad.

What's your point? They made a better product than other companies, and made it when it was requried. I fail to see the issue.

Are you kidding? F1 racing is an insignificant source of pollutants, considering how few cars there are, and how seldom they race. What's more, a gallon of gasoline burned by an F1 car produces the exact same carbon emissions as a gallon burned by any other car. The only difference is in stuff that smells bad.

BTW, here is some video taken at Bahrain today - pre season testing.

Video

Boy the Renaults are ugly this year with the yellow/white/orange paint scheme...

Agreed. They look like ass.

It looks like Alonso might have made the right move judging by the pre-season test results. Renault has been lackluster and Giancarlo Fisichella looks mediocre as usual...outshined by yet another less experienced teammate.

Oh, and kudos to Honda. You don't see any manufacturers in neckcar doing this...behind the times as usual.
