Do pedestrians get hit that often for it to make a difference? I would like to minimize damage to my car when I hit a deer.

I think they should design it to maximise pedestrian damage if they want to sell these cars in the US. Corpses can't sue, but some guy with a couple broken legs sure can.

IIRC It's actually mandated (via guidelines) by the local transportation authorities. It affects the front-end design, hood-height, etc. of every vehicle on the road.

I think I've seen this commercial before. I didn't realise it was a Honda. It's about these two men playing catch with a football. One guy goes, go deep, and then the other starts running and watching the football. He hits the hood of a parked car (I think he catches the ball), falls down and gets up like nothing happened. Then it cuts to the voiceover but I don't remember what they said.

I'd thought that was a VW commercial.

It was a VW commercial... And it's not that the manufacturer is doing it out of the kindness of their heart, but because it's REQUIRED by European standards.

but family members can and will. Plus jail time for killing someone is a liot more than for hurting someone.

Guess you haven't been to Toronto then? It's amazing how many pedestrian fatalities we have. The large majority are the fault of pedestrian who run wildly infront of cars and buses.

its a new european standard.. all cars have to soften teh blow of pedestrians. I belive its been implemented here too. Basically it will be a bubble front end and there is space between the top of the block and the hood.

This just means more ugly cars.

Just like how we have much larger bumpers that Japanese cars. I need to get me some JDM bumpers for my car. The front one alone would cut about 2" off the overall length.

peugeot are already on this....though you americans probably wont know

their new 407 range has been designed to minimize pedestrian injury in an accident. i saw a test .... you can actually slam your head on the hood of the car and it will simply deform around your head leaving u in pretty good shape
