honda hawk? NT650

personal reviews on this?

I'm just about to finish my MSF class. never been on a bike prior.

i was looking for a naked bike mainly mid 90 GS500 but right now market is dried up.

I found one of these NT650 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_NT650

mileage is somewhere in the 32-35k. Guy is pretty local. Bike is red and clean. for its age. modded handle bars and exhaust a little bit. he owned it about 6 years. i think it sat for 2, had the carbs cleaned a while ago. Might be this year but he just stated it was cleaned.

guy is looking at $2000, what do you guys think this is worth? my thoughts are i just need something to get me pass 1-2 years. if its problem free then i might keep it.

my buddy has one. Loves it. Its got kinda a weird following.

Seems like a lot for that kind of miles IMO.

$2k isn't bad at all for a hawk with less than 40k in decent condition, but I'd offer $1700 out of principle... It is spring which makes it hard to bargain with.

I don't have personal experience but a good friend has one, and I've done a good bit of research in the past without finding any major flaws other than an SV is usually cheaper.

i like the SV, i never heard of this hawk untill i saw the ad. then i started to look into it and i think the style is badass.

the SV in my area were $2600-3500 range for 01-02 models with 15k. If there was one closer to $2600 right now i would look into that. But the hawk showed up, i like the styling and i'm waiting for the guy to have sometime.

If it sat for 2 years make sure it was set up for storage before sitting.

My bike sat for about 2 years but the fuel was left in it and not setup correct. I had to strip the fuel system down and rebuild the carbs.
So if it does not start and run well then set yourself up to rebuild the fuel system. That and 2 years sitting means it will needs tires and a battery at least, that and fluid change of course.

But yea it should be a good bike if you did well in the MSF class.

I bought an 07 SV with 3500 miles for $3100 last year. Yeah it was a crazy deal but if you shop around I think you can get an easily get a first gen SV for $2500.

Personally....

1st gen SV < Hawk < 2nd gen SV

That being said, out of the 3 I'd personally prefer the hawk... It's almost as "good" as a 2nd gen SV, I'd say within 5% performance-wise (just a guess) but it has much cooler technology while still being easy to work on

I live in a fairly populated area, and there are a number of people who scour CL and bike forums looking for these things... It's not uncommon to see people asking (and getting!) $4k from the right buyer.

i dont know the exactly order it of what beens done and when at the moment. I know he owned for 5 years, sat in heated storage for 2 years. At one point he had things rebuilt and rejetted for his intake and exhaust. if the rebuilt was done AFTER the storage GREAT if not i guess i'll be due for that.

haven't taken the test i think i'm about at the mid of the pack in my MSF class. i know how to drive a maunal so that helped a lot. I dont have everything down to a T with only like 8 hours on a bike and about 3-4 was just listening, waiting and people stalling in front of me.

reading around hawk parts are extremely rare. gas tanks are impossible to find and i hope there is no rust. I think i would rather go with a SV but hey never rode either yet. I'm just looking for something to expand with. being in chicago, theft is always in the back of my mind. while i like the $2000 price i think i would be really happy getting it something in the $1500-1700.

quick questions. how does one tell a carb needs to be clean and synced, other then the fact it runs like its misfiring or has hard start up?

how can i test the front forks for being good other then no obiovusly fluid leak? is there a bounce test like on struts/shocks.

people told me to look at the drive gear/s, other then rust and obvious damages what else.

I would find someone in your area that knows bikes to go look at it with you....

Knowing it's your first bike I'd recommend passing on it, and putting that $1800 towards a GS500 (my favorite starter bike) or ninja 500

my people only know how to drive and ride cars/bikes.

i've only had 3 bikes on my list due to style, looks and price.

honda hornet, SV650 and GS500 with or without fairings. This hawk comes in and i really like it.

i'm not sure why i like these bikes, maybe cause they are naked bikes, cheaper insurance, cheap price or maybe cuase they are the typical ZX6R/Gixxer, cbrf4 type of stuff all my friends own. I like speed and all but i love my life. I'm on a dirt bike in my MSF 200cc or so, that isn't going to cut it for me. kinda like a civic other then pure MPG commute isn't going to cut it for as a car.

A NT650 with a jet kit barely makes over 50rwhp while a gen1 sv650 make about 67ish. The sv does almost everything better than the nt650. They're nice bikes but not worth the price if you can get a sv for only a little bit more.

Ok well keep in mind that this will not be your last bike.... So looks/style shouldn't be as important (imo) as reliability/level of maintenance and resale...

Out of your list the GS is by far the best 'first bike'... They hold their value very very well so you can learn on it and cycle out/up to something else...

holy crap on the SV650, he just posted that today... i gotta hit him up.

does the carbs actually cost that much $400?

from a stealer? yeah that sounds about right for a carb cleaning.

you try and just yank them and spray them full of $3/bottle carb cleaner, thats what I always try first, along with half a bottle of fuel system cleaner in the gas tank

Good deal on that and I wonder how long it'll last. I'd also just trade that aftermarket system for a stocker + cash.

this isn't like a car, its not my only means of getting around. this could be my one and only bike. but i get what your saying. Resale is key.

never been on a bike, yea i know the first year or so i will love and always want to be out.

I'd try and get the hawk for $1700ish if this is your first bike. It makes an excellent starter bike and is relatively light.

You have to start adding different kinds to the garage so you accumulate them faster. Need a dirt bike, a long distance bike, a track bike, a around town bike, etc. 😀

Then you need to get your wife to ride and your set.

been working on the riding thing for awhile, shes pretty scared on the back.

no need for a dirt bike, but would love a dual sport, and a touring. have a project older sportbike, and a 06 R6. Im kinda selling the R6 to get another sport-esk vtwin like a Aprilia Tuono, Duc S4R, or more likely, get a cheap SV650 so when I dump it at a trackday I dont cry 😛

and i want an FJR 😀

I'm apparantly limited to 2, which sucks, one rider and one wrecher, would like 3 or 4.

a sport, standard, and DS rider and project...

maybe i'll get that mind set down the road. well if this SV650 would text back or email me back. i could be in business right now.

I was going to suggest looking at the wera boards if you were serious about a track day bike. I just checked and it seems they changed around their for sale section and now it's just a shell of previous awesomeness. They use to have 15-20 track/bikes a day listed there and a crazy amount of parts.

yeah

its 10 bucks to list a bike for sale now 😵

it used to be THE place to shop for parts and ragged out bikes.
