Honda Fit Sport tires

IronWing

No Lifer
It is cheaper to buy a new set of 14" rims and tires than it is to replace the 15" low profile tires that come standard on the Fit Sport. All I really wanted from the Sport package was cruise control. 🙁

Should be no more than $90-100/tire mounted and balanced..you could sell your 15's and downsize.. /shrug

Discount Tire quoted $179/tire for the 15". That's when I asked about downsizing to 14" rims. Plus low profile tires don't make for a comfortable ride. Fortunately the problem tire was repairable. When the time comes to replace the set, selling the 15" rims is the path I'll be following.

Yeah I'm wondering what hookah's in their pipe...

I guessed that you're driving a 2008, though it's the 15" rim size so it shouldn't matter.
Factory tires were ~$100/each, and mounting/balancing should be no more than $25/tire.

....$179/tire? The most expensive tire in your size at Discount Tire Direct is the Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S at $130.77 with a $70 rebate, so $453.08/4, or $113.27 per tire. Mounting and balancing should be $15-20/ea.

Here was the tire quoted:

Yokohama YK520, P195/55R-15 85H B

Online it is listed at $120. In the store it was quoted at $179 total including mounting, balancing, tax, and road hazard certs. Total for four was $716.

Four 14" rims, tires, and certs was quoted at $680.

LOL....I was in this dilemma with my Mazda 3. 17 inch tires are expensive....Econo car my ass.....I had to get coupons and discounts galore to get my Dunlops Sports at $100 a piece.

The road hazard adds a fair amount of money to that, plus you're figuring about $100 in mounting/balancing/disposal that you will pay no matter where you buy the tires.

You're over-paying by looking in store.

Find a set of tires that you want that are sold both by Tire Rack and your tire place. Print out the final cost of the tires shipped by TireRack and ask them to match the price on the tires (With shipping). You'll still pay tax, but you won't have to wait on the shipment.

If you really hate spending money on your tires, a 14-inch wheel might make sense in the longer term. I imagine the Fit's brakes aren't especially large, but you'll want to make sure a 14-inch wheel will clear the brakes. Also, keep in mind that a super-cheap 14-inch wheel will be just that. It will be a cast POS that will be damaged a lot easier than your quality OEM wheels.

Lastly, if you want a more comfortable tire on your OEM wheels look at Touring tires. They are designed for more comfort and less noise.

The Goodyear Eagle GT 195/55-15 at Tirerack would be about $374 shipped for a set of 4. There's a local place in my area that will mount and balance 4 new tires and dispose of 4 old tires for $50 including tax. That would be $424 total. The Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum seems to get really good reviews and is even cheaper.

Those prices arn't even that bad. 1 tire for my car is $438. That's a tire rack quote. :-/ So that should help you feel not so bad about yours. 🙂

PS I am broke.

samsclub shows prices between 85-145 per tire in your size range. Tack on a $40 membership and $15 per tire install/road hazard. May be a better option.

FWIW, Sam's Clubs, Costco's, etc generally carry one-off versions off the main model/brand tires. Supposedly these are cost reduced versions, made with cheaper components or cheaper processes. I have no hard data on this, just something I've seen mentioned at a few places. For the average econocar tire, or for a calm driver, not a big deal I'd imagine. But a performance tire on a car that is driven hard...might want to think twice about that. Food for thought

Their main stock can be one offs that you only find there, but they have quick ship special order ones that are competitive in price/performance. I usually have to order in as no one stocks the tires for my grand am.
