I was looking at getting a CRV until I saw the paper this morning. I don't have a direct link, so I'll quote directly from the paper:

"American Honda Motor Co. said Friday, it is notifying dealers about a possible defect that has caused at least 27 CR-V sport utility vehicles from the 2003 and 2004 model years to catch fire after getting their first oil changes."

And theres a pic of one on the side of the road in flames... dang. I don't know about getting this as a family vehicle now. Hopefully, its something that can be easily fixed. Until then, I'll be holding off...

It is something that can be easily fixed, from what I gathered from the other threads - all you need is a watchful eye and a rag to clean up any spilled oil. Make sure the filter is put on correctly, and clean up any spills before you drive away. That said, they might also (as has been said before) want to look at putting a shield or deflector between the filter and the exhaust manifold to direct any spills away from the hot spots.

Who'd have thunk that spilled oil and extreme heat would result in flamability? Surely not I! This happened because of lazy techs. So many techs are lazy, so it's not surprising.

but why would the car burst into flame? I've spilled a little oil myself, in the process of either changing it or just adding some - the car smelled like it was burning old rubber raincoats for a few miles afterwards, but it didn't go up in smoke.

IMO, people really shouldn't be flipping out too badly over this - they're talking about, I believe, less than 30 incidents out of 150k + vehicles sold over the last two model years (140k '03, and whatever they've sold this year). The odds of your particular CRV going up in flames seems to be pretty slim.

If it was really that bad they'd issue a recall. But they aren't. Just have the dealer check it over next time you take it in...
