Honda Civic and Ridgeline win

When it comes to car shopping, whether or not a vehicle was "Car or Truck of the Year" by any organization or group is about even with the number of cupholders in my list of importantance.

I really could give two sh!ts.

After tracking Motor Trend's choices for Car of the Year for 30 years I have very little respect for it.

In the past, MT has given the award to some real dogs.

this isn't an MT award

My mistake. MT did give the new Civic its Car of the Year award.

Let me get another cup of coffee in me and I'll ante up a 4th.

All the "car" magazines rate the Ridgeline high...and that is because it drives like a car...which is to say it handles much better than a regular truck. But *few* people are buying a truck for it's handling.

Regardless, I'm sure it is a decent truck, but that thing is just UGLY. I haven't met a person who hasn't thought so...but apparently some people disagree since I've seen them driving around in it. Still, I don't think this vehicle appeals to the majority of truck owners which I think are split between three groups:

1) Guys who think having a truck is required to be a "real man".
2) Guys who actually use their truck for work or hobbies.
3) Guys who live a active youth "lifestyle" who need *ahem* the offroad capabilities/utilites for thier interests.

Maybe Honda is going for the soccer mom truck or something, but I think that niche is smaller than they thought...as soccer moms like SUVs at the moment.

I've ragged on the Ridgeline in other threads...but I'll do it again.

*real world* reviews of it have been bad. Really bad. The milage on it is worse than Frontier (which is worse than the Tacoma). It's got a glass jaw suspension that was destroyed in very light off road duty. It's got a bed that is only accessible by the tailgate area. I want to be able to toss stuff in the bed behind the cab. Can't do it with the Ridgeline because those pillars back there are so high...which also makes for horrible blind spots.

Not to mention that it's a horrible eyesore to look at.

It has milage worse than a real truck.
It isn't as durable as a real truck.
It's not as accessible as a real truck.
And it's ugly.

Winning combo there.

I'll give it bonus points for the under bed cargo. But that's it.

I don't understand why car magazine writers, who are supposed to be enthusiasts, judge every vehicle by car standards. I think Csaba Csere even bashed the new Land Rovers for their off road features. The irony is that the new LRs aren't off road vehicles anymore (independent suspensions, low ground clearance, etc), and that if they WERE, off road capability would matter far more than road manners.
