Homeworld fans

Homeworld fans should check out a new upcoming game called Sword of the Stars. appears to be made by the same people who did Homeworld. I never played homeworld but it looked cool.

only thing is the graphics don't look so hot from some of the screenshots i saw.

I first saw this over in one of FiringSquad's Games that Need Sequels articles. They mentioned it under the Homeworld section. Its not being made by Relic, the people who did Homeworld. Its being made by Bark Dog Studios, the people who did Homeworld Cataclysm, HW's expansion.

As far as I know, Relic, now owned by THQ, doesn't own the rights to HW, Vivendi does. Relic can't actually make another HW game. 🙁

Here's what FS says about it in their article.

"Odds for Revival: Possible. There was a published rumor in Game Informer magazine a few months ago that Relic, now owned by THQ, was trying to buy the Homeworld property rights from its current owner Vivendi Games but there has not been any confirmation of this bit of news. Oddly enough, a development team composed of former Barking Dog members are working on a game called Sword of the Stars that combined turn based strategy with real time 3D space combat. Our view on this is that the Homeworld name and the overall quality of the series itself will become hard to ignore and that a new game in the series will eventually happen. The big question: Will Relic be in charge of its development?"

Sword of the Stars to Homeworld is a bad comparison. It is being heralded as the MOO2 of this generation. And yes, graphics aren't big when it comes to space strategy sims. Anyone looking for the next MOO2, really won't care about graphics at all.

Only time will tell whether it delivers though.

Edit: Oh and Czar it won't be MOO3 unless it sucks 🙂

It will be moo3 if you cant get to the actual gameplay because of a poorly done interface. 🙂

And actually graphics do matter, they dont have to be using the latest and greatest graphics and forcing your graphics card to its limit. They only have to give you the feel that they spent time designing it instead of it just being an afterthought. Look at Civ4 for example, graphics are nothing special but its the gameplay and interface that makes the game.

I'd say Civ4's graphics are awesome. Sure the unit models aren't amazing, but the cities and the world are excellent and they were all built off another game's engine (the engine built for pirates! 2). Since the graphics engine was already built, they didn't have to spend much Civ4 dev time working on it.

But Civ4 isn't a space strategy, space strategies are an even smaller nitch of hardcore strategy fans and if you look back over space strategy sims, none of them have ever had great graphics. GalCiv2 is decent but it's nothing to write home about. SotS will most likely be decent too.

The graphics engine looks like HW2's. Notice some of the gun effects looks oddly similar to HW2, the nebula/planetary background looks similar. Even the poly limitation and jaggy from HW2 is also evident in alot of the screenshot. At most this is just a mod for HW2.

It would be kick ass if they can do another homeworld or a good space RTS with graphics of today (Eve/X3).

The only interesting thing seems to be the shapes of the ships. Otherwise, the look of it reminds me a bit of X-Wing vs TIE Fighter, which was released in 1997.
