So the Supreme Courts have held that certain amendments to the Constitution imply a right to privacy. So what authority do they have to pass laws such as the patriot act that limit or restrict our fundamental rights?

Please no sarcastic answers or political arguments. I'm looking specifically for a law-student esque answer here.

because they saw a threat to our country as more important than our rights to privacy.
