Hometheater and music question

Ok so here in the run down.
I basically am getting a huge 60in hdtv
I have a nice kenwood reciever and Huge JBL s-310's and jbl surrounds.
On my computer i have about 80gis of music and albums ive ripped from over the years.
I also have about 150DVD's

What would be the best solution when it comes to hooking my stereo reciever up to my computer. Or what are my options. I want to be able to somehow have my computer be the server for music etc. Can anyone give me a rundown of programs i might use or can i control the music from my tv?

I also miught have an old 2100+ 1gb computer that i could use as a music store.

Lastley, the dvd's. What kind of changer could i get that doesnt cost an arm and a leg

a sound card with optical out would be appropriate. I'm not up on the quality sound cards these days but it would behove you to spend some dough on it (couple hundre)

A chaintech AV-710 for $25 is a great optical out card if you want to go that route.

I control music with my wireless keyboard, but it sound like you want something more elaborate than making a playlist and then skipping through it with the keyboard....

XBMC = your problem solved.

An XBMC is something i have 🙂

Just a little easier controlling playlists on computer. BTW whats the difference between running the music through the network to the xbox then from hd pack to reciever as opposed to using a sound card with optical directly to reciever

thats a good question. but since i listen to all my music in stereo format it doesn't matter. if you were trying to get 5.1 sound then thats where i am not sure what would happen. but none of my music is in 5.1 so i dont care 😛

most receivers do, but still, simulated 5.1 sound doesn't sound like real 5.1 by any means. there are only 2 channels that it "simulates" into 6 channels, which makes for nothing like 5.1 in all honesty.

if something is in 2.0 sound, it usually sounds better in 2.0 than in "simulated" 5.1

Well if you want you could get something like the Squeezebox but really that's only a music solution. The other option would be to get a MediaMVP although to get the full potential out of it you'd have to hack it a bit to include a coaxial digital output.
