Hi, I'm a college student, and quite frankly, I'm pretty much always broke. However, I have managed to save up around 1500 dollars to spend on a decent home theater system for myself.

I plan on getting the SONY 27 inch trinitron wega wide screen TV for sure, since it gives me the best price return... I would opt for a 32 incher.. but that'd cost me another 600 dollars ...

THIS BRINGS me to my main question: Should I shell out around 700-800 dollars for a Home Theater system from Sony/Panasonic/Pioneer w/ a DVD player...

Or will the CREATIVE LABS DESKTOP THEATER 5.1 <recently saw at Best Buy for 219.99> be sufficient for my SOUND NEEDS?

I really want to experience the best for my money.

Here are some links on what I plan on getting if you are truly interested...

THE TV I plan on getting.. model KV-27FV16
Here

THE SONY Home Theater System that interests me the most.. model HT-1000D
Here

THE PANASONIC Home Theater System that interests me the most... model SC-HT80
]Here

AND we all know what the DESKTOP 5.1 is like will it provide enough power?

All your help is appreciated thanks in advance

Got to the bookstore and get this month's issue of Stereo Review's Sound and Vision Magazine. They have a wole bunch of stuff about budget home theater including recommended systems at various price points.

And they know what they are talking about.

Wow you're going to be the envy of your dorm with that kinda equipment... Anyways that Wega will REALLY set you back some bucks but they sure are nice. As for a sound system I would definitely stray away from Sony. Sure they make good tv's, but not such great sound systems. They have quality receivers but their speakers are only decent and all of their speakers systems are way overpriced. I would consider putting together a system separately instead of purchasing a home theater package b/c unless it's bose you won't be getting great sound in a package. I consider those theater packages starter systems and that's all they are. If you're serious about it you should start doing some research on receivers and speakers. For the receiver you should look for something w/ Dolby digital/DTS decoding and try not to get any lower than 100watt/channel. Look for the Pioneer VSX-509's and higher models. They are pretty decent and extremely cheap for what they provide. As for speakers I can't really advise you on anything specific but you have options on it. If you want something compact get 5 speakers and at least a 100watts for a sub. Otherwise you can get 2 loudspeakers, 2 surrounds and a center. BTW this might cost you more than you have so you might have to end up getting a package. If you search around enough though you might be able to find something nice cheap. Check auctions but stay away from e bay b/c you'll probably be paying more than retail over there!

Check out the site www.onecall.com They know there stuff and sell only quality. The retail store they're affiliated with has been around for over 80 years(long before hi-fi). Look for brands like Onkyo and H-K and speaks from Atlantic, JBL, or NHT.
Good luck!!!!!!!!!
