Homeserver Mobo - Atom 330 or D510?

I'd be grateful for any suggestions here! I'm building a simple WHS box, not going to be used as an HTPC although I might in a limited way stream some media. I was originally looking at the Intel Atom 330 mobo/cpu combo. Some searching on Newegg turned up a handful of equivalently priced/spec'd D510 board, however.

Not sure if this will work or not but here's the comparison I ran:

I'm tempted to pay the extra $5 and get the Intel-made D510 combo, but I don't know much about Atom generally. I'd be really grateful for any advice (including any non-Atom or non-Intel solutions, if you think there are better ones!).

The 510 is just the newer version of the 330. The improvements have to do with power savings, not performance. In any case, may as well get the newer stuff and not the older stuff.

One thing I want to point out, since you are using it for storage, is that these boards all have only two SATA ports.

I know of a few Atom based boards with more SATA ports, but they are all larger than ITX. The next smallest is the Zotac DTX based board:

ZOTAC NM10-DTX WiFi

It has six SATA plus one eSATA. I think it may actually use a third part chip for the extra ports, but still they are onboard.

Thanks Zap!

I did notice that, about the SATA ports. I currently have a relatively small amount of data, so my thinking is that I'll hook up two 1 TB drives, raid or mirror them, and that 1 TB of data should be enough for at least a year, maybe more. If I ever need additional storage, I can either just move old archived files out onto an external USB, or add a third internal HD (via a PCI card? I can't think of anything else I'd use the slot for). Unfortunately my case maxes out at two 3.5" anyway, so the third drive will be going in the optical slot 🙂

Still though I wouldn't mind a more equipped board if I could keep a very small form factor. All my past experience has been with standard sized boards, so when I started plotting this one I just went as small as possible (mITX). The mATX cases looked substantially larger, but I didn't look that hard either. Do you think its worth looking larger?
