I dont know why, but I dont think a garage door should be right next to a front door or be the prominent feature of a home. The garage should be set back at the end of a drive or even better not even visible from the street.

Yes, I know, we buy what we can afford. But todays homes are mostly cookie cutter replicas all with just a garage door next to the front door.

Boring.

That's why I prefer single story 2000+ sq ft houses on extra wide lots when dealing with tract homes in subdivisions. Aesthetically I prefer a "wing" of the house opposite of the garage and in counter balance and equal size to a 2.5-3+ car garage with the entry are in between.

I hate two story narrow lot houses with nothing but a garage door on the street and a deep and narrow trailer like floor plan.

I agree. I would like my daily garage on the side/not visible.....and dis attached garage/shop set way back into the property.

One day....one day......

Meh, whatever. Unless you have multiple access to your property or you have a massive estate, it's pretty impractical to not have your garage on the side facing the street.

NOTE: My garage is detached and has a secondary access so the front of my house is just "house" with no garage. Still, it's not practical for most houses.

I like my garage doors on the front. Why? I regularly work in my garage and when I open the doors, a nice breeze blows through. I also like to be working in my garage and be able to see my kids playing out front in the driveway or yard and see people as they come up to my house. Aesthetically, I think it looks correct to have a door, the front of a house, and a garage off to the side.

They used to call them shotgun houses, now they call them townhouses.

First pic isn't loading but you couldn't pay me to live in the "better" house. What a boring looking home.

I think it's mostly for convenience - so you can bring your groceries right into the kitchen from the garage.

Garages look best when they're not front-facing IMO. My ideal house would be something like a 2-story Craftsman, 4bd/2.5ba, 2-car garage off to the side. Basically this:

I would prefer to have attached 4 car garage with 2 big doors on the side of the house, and then a detached pole barn with workshop and room to park a dozen or so cars/toys.

That said, my income level does not afford me such luxury.

Hadn't really given it much thought. I shall have to ask the chauffeur where she parks the car.

I prefer a home where I don't have to drive 100 miles to get to my job each day. Oh, and decent schools and low crime.

Depends on the house.

But yeah, I don't consider that "better" house all that nice.

However, like everyone says, we buy what we can afford. Most don't have the option of huge lots with rear private drives hiding the massive 4-car garage.

And the first pic isn't loading for me either. Drag and drog gives me nothing.

In LA, you can't get anything liveable unless you make making $125k+ w/ no debt so we pause to take into consideration such matters.

It is fugly but it is the most practical layout. Having the garage in front allows for easy car access to the street and also allows you to pave the smallest length of driveway thereby reducing costs and increasing lawn space.

Yeah, OK. If I didn't live in a fucking area where there were other houses nearby, why the fuck not? Oh wait, I LIVE IN A FUCKING CITY AND THAT'S HIGHLY IMPRACTICAL.

The more complicated the the roof structure is the harder it is to replace the roof and the more often you will have to replace the roof. Where intersecting planes occur water collects and rots the roof i.e. valleys. This is my opinion. Maybe if the roof is steep the water will run off better.

So when it is 20 degrees outside, and there is snow on the ground, do you want to walk through your house to the garage or walk through the snow to get to the garage? Maybe if you live in an area like California where it never snows a separate garage might be nice. My cousin builds houses and he had a really nice house with an attached 2-3 car garage that they dont normally park in. Then he also has a separate 2.5 car garage.

If the power goes out and the only door is a garage door how can you open it? How secure is that exactly? How do you lock it? They make garage door openers that can scan for the right signal.

Some corner lots in my neighborhood have garage and driveway on the side, and I do like how they look. As far as garage in the front though? My house is like that and it does not bother me at all.
