Has anyone had any luck with a HomePNA card in Linux? I currently have a network based on the original Diamond HomeFree cards (though I've got some 3com 3c410's on order) and want to start sharing my soon-to-be installed DSL connection over my HomePNA network. For this I've got an old computer that I want to use as a router. Linux would obviously be the best choice for this and is what I'd like to use but I need to be able to use a HomePNA card as one of the network cards in order for this to work right. If I can't find a Linux compatible HomePNA card then I'm gonna have to use a Windows XP box as a router (you I'm desperate guys :)).

Thanks for any suggestions.

Homepna support inside of linux is pretty limited. There are only a few cards that are supported, and support varies by kernel version. Speaking from experience, you can use your diamond homepna card inside of linux. Kernel version 2.4 will only work with the 10 base T port. On the other hand, kernel version 2.2 will only work with the phoneline port. If you are looking to build a internet connection sharing router / firewall for your home network, I recommend smoothwall . The distro installs easy on old hardware and is very stable. Smoothwall version 2.0 is based off of a linux 2.4 kernel. If you are using the 10baseT port use this version. Otherwise download .9.9se since its based off of kernel 2.2

Well, actual support of the Diamond card isn't an issue. I've got network cards coming out the yin-yang around here. I specifically need something that supports the phoneline connection b/c that's how my homenetwork is setup. You say the older version of Smoothwall does support it so that's a good thing (I was planning on going w/ Smoothwall anyways). Hopefully those 3c410 cards will be picked up by Linux and I won't have to worry about it (they look like better cards anyways).
