Homepage image quality lowered?

I noticed recently a lot of very low quality JPEGs used in the homepage article leads. Was this an intended change? Strangely, it's mixed with PNGs, which on the web make sense only for line art/chart sort of graphics, or when you need lossless.

It's nothing we've intentionally changed. For CES stuff we often upload lower quality images due to bandwidth limitations.

Thanks.

Not only CES. And do extra 10-20KB per image for the small homepage photos really matter when uploading?

E.g., this nasty 5K image:

Or this 11K one:
carousel_carousel.JPG

I guess it may be less noticeable on higher resolution monitors or when watching from a distance, but still, at least JPEG mosquito noise should be banned from the web, if not also 4:2:0 chroma sampling when there are small colored details. 🙂
