homeowners: backflow prevention device testing (in-ground sprinklers, etc.)

Apparently an annual test is required on the backflow prevention device associated with my in-ground sprinklers. Does a $60 rate for this to be done sound reasonable ? I'm in NY. Trying to call around, but a search for people who do them isn't resulting in too many hits. Do ALL plumbers do this test ?

I'm toying with the idea of installing a sprinkler system this spring. How many backflow preventers do you have? One for each zone or do you have a single preventer installed upstream from the manifolds?

I'm looking forward to designing the controller. 😀
