A waveguide antenna is pretty effective depending on the range you need. With proper line of sight, I have been over 2000 ft in range. Pretty inexpensive to make also. If you need signal over great distances, then a parabolic antenna would work, but be more expensive, and you would still need line of sight.
I've made a few waveguides - the best one uses the cardboard tube from a whiskey bottle lined with foil. When making them you must keep all dimentions within milimeters (like less than 2 milimeters...) of spec or you won't get the performance you expect.
This is a reflector made from cardboard and aluminum foil. It goes over an existing antenna and gives you a few dB extra. This is not good enough for mile-long runs, but will make a difference if you already have a marginal connection. Now, if you put one on each end of the link...
**EDIT**
I re-read your post. This is not the best design for a laptop. However, if you have a problem area in your house (garage, back yard, etc.), and you have a router with two antennas, this might be good to go on one of them.
