Homebuilt, Homemade, DIY, Custom, Modded computers

im looking for good references on various homebuilt pc projects. im particularly interested in making my own portable pc, in a boombox/stereo type form. i have seen some where people replace the guts of an old cassette player, but im looking for something entirely custom made.

or how about people who put internet machines in their fridges? or pc's in their cars? im not finding a whole lot of sites that deal with this stuff, people seem to go no further then buying a htpc case and calling that a 'project'. blah.

thanks much for the links, but to be bluntly honest those arent quite what im looking for. mini-itx is/should be what i want, but if you go through all those projects they are really nothing more then "you might be a geekneck if you put a computer inside a tube of toilet paper". a couple of the idea seemed useful or cool, but 90% of the stuff on that site is crap. i even read one that said something like "i was bored and decided to put a computer inside a cardboard box duhh eeehhh heh eeehh heh". where are the recliners that have built-in vnc access to any pc in the house? where are the home-made digital picture frames made 10 times better then you can buy in-store? where are the hand-crafted boombox's packed with car audio electronics and a laptop motherboard? see what im sayin? not just 'cute' stuff, more like monster garage for pc's....

They're waiting for you to build them, so you can post your pictures and instructions on their site.

and i cant wait. once i get a welder and some metal fab tools in my garage, look out. a bit of money will help too, but as long as i keep finding work that shouldnt be a problem. i think about this stuff all the time, i have come to conclusions that laptop motherboards are the best way to go. ebay is a great place to get them too...

ps- the last two links look nice, ill have to dig into those tonight, thank you.

To be honest you can build anything cheaper than what you are describing. A lot cheaper. I've seen things like you have described and only the rich can afford it. Few people can pay thousands of dollars for some of the things like that out there. Most those places that offer them either discontinue them or go belly up because the prices are so high there's no market for them because no one can afford it.

well these projects i do are never have much economical sense, even this juke-box pc im thinking of will be a grand easy. its a hobby, a useful one for me at least as i would basically have a rugged, portable pc capable of rockin out louder then most car stereo's. mmmm. 😀 and it will look good too, im not after jerry riggin this all together with duct tape. nope, its going to look factory made. hopefully hahaha
