Can you hear the drive spin up? most likely if it was dropped with enough force to break a piece off, then the drive is hosed. either the platters shattered(i did this to a laptop drive) or the spindle motor is FUBAR.

I'll have to check tonight. I can't remember whether it was making noise or not. After the boot-disks we'll see...
