Homebrew Report #250984

I brewed root beer once. It was pretty terrible. Tasted like yeast. Based on the username, I bet yours will be better.

I just made 5 gallons of porter last night. By this morning the lock was already dancing 🙂

HBD have you ever done wine?

just a barley wine... 🙂

how about you? I hear that is technically easier than brewing beer, though harder to produce high quality results.

i would love to try and make our favorite wine... Ice Wine and maybe a reisling!

Ice Wine's are really hard to make, it takes some real skill to pick the grapes at the right time.

I have done a few ciders, and intend to start a mead or strawberry mellomel next weekend.
I am almost out of my last batch of beer (20 gallons of Dopplebock) so I might start fermenting a new batch, any suggestions?

If you are used to store-bought root beer, brewed root beer tastes weird. I prefer HBD's way - just use the ready-made flavoring and force-carbonate it. I also use nitro to tap it. Gives it a creamy texture.

The process is simpler and the tolerance for error can be a little higher, IMHO, but it takes a lot longer. Usually 2 weeks in primary, a month at least in secondary, then racking till clear (2-3 months often), then aging for 6-9 months. Meads and some wines need to age several years before they're even potable.

I have 5 gallons of cherry wine ready to bottle and 1 gallon of white grape/rasberry in primary at the moment.

Yea, a good mead takes about a year to age, and a cider can take even longer.
My last cider was still improving when I opened the last bottle (I use 750ml bottles) over 2 years later. The first bottle opened 6 months after bottleing was really rough, and had a werty flavor, after a year it has settled into a good cider, after 2 years it was an excelent cider.

I may have to try this. I've got a 5 gallon keg, but no place to keep it cold, which is why I haven't put beer in it.

Root beer isn't bad warm, and unlike beer you can freeze the glasses and serve it that way. I like root beer almost more than regular beer 😀.

When I was an undergrad, one of the organizations I was in got a bunch of underclassmen to come to our picnic because we told them "We were getting a keg". What we left out was that it was a keg of root beer. Apparently that's still a favorite story among the faculty.

heh, I can't even imagine making my own wine. But then again, I live in the wine country and am a bit of an elitist when it comes to wine.

Can't you use a frozen glass for beer? I do sometimes.
