😀😀😀😀

what yeast in this batch? Looks like it had quite a vigorous secondary fermentation

BTW, sanitizer isn't that expensive, I use hydrogen peroxide and it works like a champ without being too expensive.

Edit: I've been meaning to ask you, how do you consume all this beer. It's not like you can go on a bender drinking IPA 😕. I've brewed four 5-gallon batches so far since April, split in two with a buddy and I still have plenty left. Meanwhile, you post homebrew reports every other week. Should I be drinking more beer?😀

Did a 5 gallon Lucknow IPA Saturday. OG=1.068, 56 IBU. Planning on a 10 gallon JPA Thursday. OG=1.068, 68 IBU. 12 oz of hops in that bad boy.

HBDude, you should try AG.

This yeast is the same as the last batch. White labs Dry British Ale (WPL 007 i think).

I racked over the previous batch (report 250970) into kegs, and threw this new batch into the secondary fermentation vessels with about an inch of lees from the first batch. This will always produce a vigorous fermentation (sometimes too good) and is a great way of stretching your yeast dollar.

I'm old school (and cheap) so I use bleach.

Braver than I. I swallowed a pretty decent amount of bleach one day by accident, so that's no longer used.

BTW, your basement and old-school sinks look exactly like mine.

I've been watching my friend's Oktoberfest batch since March... I totally can't wait until we crack into those kegs.

I am pretty happy with extract / mini-mash at the moment. Probably go to AG after i finish my dissertation.

Hmmm... straight to the secondary? I've reused yeast, but I usually use a primary and secondary again. BTW, do you have any tricks, when reusing yeast, to remove hops that are there because of dry-hopping?

Also, see above post concerning consumption. 😀

Yeah, its technically not advised, but I figure if I am careful and rack the new over to secondary sooner (within 3-4 days) rather than later, then I won't get any off flavors from the yeast autolyzing. It has worked for me in the past and the previous batch was not to dissimilar (ie. not going from a stout to a kolsh).

One thing use a quart jar to let your yeast/hops/protiens settle out into strata and then use a turkey baster to draw from the yeast level. OR you can swirl the trub, let the big stuff settle, and then pour the liquid into a new contain. The liquid will have several hundred thousand (if not millions) yeast cells suspended in it.

I had just given away 7 batches worth at a wedding last month, and I have a beer guzzling friend visiting next week. Also, my pregnant wife drinks like a fish.

j/k on the last part.

seriously I give a lot away.... i drink about 2/day. just like my doctors recommends. 🙂

Like HBDude I give alot away. I did 175 gallons last year (25 less than my legal limit). This year I'm only up to 75 gallons. Of that, I only have about 1/2 keg left (plus the 5 gallons fermenting).

Oh yeah, I still have two 12 oz and one 22oz bottle of the Chimay Blue clone I did last year. Hanging on to those for a while.

All this talk of beer made me thirsty so I poured myself a glass of homebrew coffee stout. I love this beer, here are a couple of pics. Note that it it is completely opaque, even with a light source shining directly through it 😀.

PIC 1
PIC 2, no light escapes from it

Cheers everyone 🙂

nice! I need to brew up a stout just for grins

I  stouts & bitters. Thank the lord for homebrewing, they're so expensive when you buy them.
