Making a porter kit from midwestsupplies... It's awesome...

My kettle is to small... I thought about it and only filled it with maybe two gallons... but since I'm using extractswhen I went to pout them in after steeping the grains, I didn't consider the volume they would add. Maybe I shouldn't be drinking while doing this, but it seems so poetic to drink beer while making beer. :)

My first boil over went fine, I caught it quick and cleaned it up... I'm glad to have that behind me. :p

I'm also very glad i bought a very expensive gas stove. The high btu burner and fine control is coming in handy.

:D

!

Hey congratulations! And do force your friends to drink it; it will taste great! I just finished my seventh ever batch of homebrew - I started fall 2004 - and every batch has come out perfectly. It's crazy how it boils over, isn't it? That has happened to me several times, and every time I'm beginning to boil the wort I think to myself "catch it before boil-over," but once it hits 212 it boils over QUICK. Be sure to keep us updated about fermentation, etc. What was the OG, have you measured it yet? I buy most of my ingredients from midwestsupplies, they have pretty good prices. Congrats!

I don't have any friends so no worries. :p

I will of course force my family to drink it. muahahhahahahah.

I did not measure O.G. I decided that I had done enough tonight, and since gravity has much to do with numbers and is terribly confusing to me I just left it alone... I'll measure next time... I had enough anxiety about following the simple instructions :)

I'm actually quite lucky. My wife LOVES stuff like this, she wants me to do whole grain brewing... I told her she's going to have to wait on that one :D

Thanks a lot, it's in the primary fermenter and I'm anxiously anticipating bubbling action!!!

Sorry, many ridiculous things have transpired which have prevented any updates.

It turned out really tasty.

It was a heavy or Imperial Porter, with an abv of about 7. I was surprised and really happy with its taste and quality... then I started reading a lot more and made a few more batches... now I'm hooked and know just how mediocre my first batch was.

Don't get me wrong. It was great and everyone who tried it liked it, but with this hobby there's always room for improvement... since then I've done (in chronological order):
English Pale Ale <-- best (light, low alcohol content, extremely drinkable)
Nut Brown Ale <-- Enjoying as I type. A little thin and slightly to bitter good but could be better
In secondary fermentation and ready to bottle is a Somked Oak, Honey-Stout It's my first foray into messing around with a recipe, I added soked oak chips to the secondary fermenter, I'm really interested to see if I messed it up.

Overall, I <3 the hobby and can see myself doing this for quite some time... I want to get things set up to do a wine as well...

Thanks for asking!
