Home Wire Base Network set up

Hello everyone,

I am sure this question comes up quite a bit but I have searched and searched and not able to figure out how to set up my home wired network.

I found the panel where all the wires run (patch panel). There it is a 8 port jack with one open spot. When I connect the modem and router to the open port I expected the rest of the house to be connected. This didn't happen obviously.

Then I found a cable + ethernet connection in another closet and tried a similar set up there (Cable >> modem >> router >> wall ) again with the hope that by feeding the internet to the jack that all jacks would be connected since they are all connected through the patch panel.

We have lived with wireless for 4 years but figured we would need a wired set up once we get a Xbox one.

Sorry to be a bother and appreciate any help.

The patch panel gathers together the ethernet wires from other parts of the house, but doesn't actually link them together. You need to connect each of the ports on that panel to a network switch, and then connect that switch to your router to provide Internet to the wall ports in the other rooms in the house.

Can you supply a few pictures of what you're looking at? This would aid us in figuring out what you actually have and can help guide you in the correct direction?
