Home theatre gurus . . . did I get a good deal?

I think you got a good deal X-Man, a friend of mine has a smiliar Sony HT in a box system and paid much more than $350.00 and it sounds quite nice 🙂

Hehe . . . I saw the same system at another place today, same receiver, speakers and sub, with only a single disk DVD player, for $499.

The system sound spretty damn good too. I'm happy. 😉

you could have done worse, the only thing i dont like about sony packages is their subs are a little anemic, other then that they are pretty good.

hope you enjoy your new home theater.

Are you guys trying to say that BB would price match a store 150 miles away😕 That isn't "local" by any standards.

the important thing is if it sounds good to you - if you enjoy it, then you got a great deal🙂

Best Buy is 150 miles away.

RossMan would have driven it. You should be hanging your head in shame.

yea, and he would have bitched about gas prices for the way there and back🙂

You just made a huge mistake. There are few products out there that suck harder than these 'home theater in a box' dealies.

So what, I should have paid two grand to buy speakers, a sub, a receiver, and a DVD changer individually?

I know it's not an all world system. I live in an apartment - if I shake the floor too much the neighbors bitch. When I buy a house I'll be sure to consult with Your Royal Assholiness as to selection of home theater components, mmkay?

My coworker bought a Sony home-theatre-in-a-box from Best Buy for about $400 also. It looks similar to yours because I remember seeing the "back view" of this thing thru the site when he asked me what I thought. After I told him there was only 1 digital-in for audio and no component video connections, he decided to return it. I recommend the Onkyo HTS650 home-theatre-in-a-box instead for ~$475 shipped from bestpriceaudiovideo.com. This is one of the best bang-for-your-buck systems available. If you must have component video (and I don't see much advantage to it thru my exhaustive testing), then buy a better receiver and speakers separately, instead of these package deals.

If you'd asked my friend, he'd say yes(about the two grand part 😉).

My receiver does only have one digital input, which is fine, because the only device I have that needs it is my DVD player.

It's got plenty of component video inputs, I'm not sure what you're referring to, exactly.

You're thinking of composite video inputs. Component is 3 inputs for the video feed only, not 1 (plus 2 audio). But like I said, it's not that great of a difference from what I saw (look for my thread about "component cables" if you really want to know).

EDIT>> My apologies... didn't look close enough - the DVD player included has Component Out so you can throw that directly to a TV (if it has Component In) so no worries. If you're not a guru (like me) and aren't looking for a premium sound/picture but still want something decent, you made out just fine.

I spent about $580 last year on a set of Athena floor-standing speakers and a Pioneer receiver.. I can always add surround speakers later. I have never looked back. My two floor-standers will hold a candle to any 'surround in a box' setup I have seen. I'd rather have 2 wonderful speakers than five cheap ones.

Nice. Can I come over to your house? 😀

LOL, reminds me of that commercial, I think it is a TV commercial of some kind, those guys are staring at a ?plasma? TV, and the guy says, "Can I sleep over/spend the night? No, really."

Yep, you got a good deal for what you want. You got a dvd player, receiver, speakers and a sub. And you didn't pay too much.

Before everyone jumps on me for saying "the stuff is all cheaply made, blah blah blah", think about what he wants. I live in an apartment where noise is not an issue. I love to have my floorstanding speakers and 12 inch sub go nuts when I watch a movie. But I paid a lot more.

In a smaller room at moderate volumes that receiver will be fine. It's got built in decoding, so you can listen to your movies in 5.1. A 100W 8 inch sub will do well in a smaller room. The small size of the speakers and the sketchy THD rating on the receiver will prevent you from wanting to blow the doors off the place.

Also, if you are going to upgrade in the future, buy your speakers used, or build your own.
