Home theater + XBox +PS2 + 5.1 audio question

I am thinking about getting a home theater receiver that does not have component video inputs but it has numerous digital inputs for audio. My XBox and PS2 are running on component video connections plugged directly into the TV. I was planning to just use the receiver for audio and run optical digital cable straight from the consoles into the receiver. Today, someone at work told me that Dolby Digital and DTS audio does not work correctly unless it is keyed to the video signal. Is this true? DO I need to have audio AND video signals going through the receiver in order to get proper 5.1 audio output? Thanks!

Whoever told you that is a moron!

Well, maybe moron is a little too harsh, but they are mistaken.

Alright, sounds like I am all set. I thought that needing the video signal to decode the audio correctly sounded a little odd :)

i would like to run the video through my (potential) new receiver and make it simple, but it does not have any component video inputs :)
