Home Theater Wiring Advice

Not sure if this is the right forum, but I didn't see one that was more appropriate.

Recently moved into a new place and I need to setup my Sony Home Theater/Surround system. In my old place, I did the "run the wire along the edge of the wall/floor thing" and tried to make it look as decent as possible. Of course, I was renting and not all that concerned with how it looked. Now that I own my place and we're decorating the crap out of it, my wife and I want to make this look as clean as possible.

I've considered a few options:

1. I've looked into wireless solutions that would make installation simple. However, there are some drawbacks. First, interference from other wireless devices in the house and surrounding area. Second, the wireless units only work for 2 speakers at a time - so I would need at least two units for my 5.1 (the units are about $175 a pop). Finally, the units themselves need some proximity to the speakers, so more clutter.

2. I have friends that have run wire through their walls, above the ceiling, and down to the other side of the room. Cleaner install, but damn that's a lot of work. Given the construction of my living room (vaulted ceilings), I don't think it's practical if at all doable.

3. The other suggestion I've received is to run the wiring under the carpet or flooring. Normally this would not be a practical idea, but I am going to lay new laminate flooring in the next week or two. This idea is the most appealing to me for that reason. I'm thinking I'll run wire for the back speakers under the floor, the front speakers I'll run up the wall and recess the speakers into the wall. My biggest concern here is the wire under the floor. Yes, I know that once we put it down, we won't have much flexibility in rearraning the setup. But we're willing to live with that. No biggie. The main thing I'm concerned about is the "feeling" the wires when we walk on that area of the floor.

I'd love to hear anyones' experiences with any of the above, or if there is some other method out there that I should consider.

Thanks.

never use wireless speakers if you even consider a "home theater". they're total junk.

there are flat speakers wires you can buy that blend pretty well with your house's interior.

Don't lay wires under your laminate flooring! It's simply not an option! To see what I mean try putting a wire under a few pieces and then walking on it... it will flex like crazy, which feels awful and destroys the laminate.

The only way you can get away with this is if you're installing another layer of subfloor (eg., 1/4" plywood) OR you can route a groove in the existing subfloor. The latter would be my preferred option since you can route the wires to wherever you want, even popping up in the middle of the room.

If you can't do that (concrete floors + not going to add plywood) then consider running the wires along the floor against the walls. There is already a gap between the laminate & the walls, so if you're careful, you can put a wire in there and still have enough room for the laminate to expand. The wire will be covered up by the baseboard.

If you can't do that (eg., wire is too thick & the gap would be visible) consider cutting a groove in the drywall where it meets the floor, or the back of the baseboard.

Many compaines make a base board moulding that you can just hide the wires in, this looks good and means you won't see the wires plus its fairly easy to install.

I wouldn't go underneath the floor or wireless both options suck you might get better suggestions from avsforum.com

Thanks for the feedback all.

Okay, looks like under the floor is not a good option. But the space between the flooring and wall is a good alternative. The moulding will help hide it. Thanks again everyone!

Of course, the floor is the perfect solution! Unless, you can prove to me that you can walk inch away from the wall where the floor and a wall meets then it would be impractical. You ran the cables right to the very corner where the wall and floor meets. With laminate flooring you will always have that 1/8"-1/4" gap between the floor and a wall. And this gap will be covered by edging boards. In fact, most edging boards use on laminate floors are hollow and that could also be another option to ran the cables. In short, you do not have to ran the cables where they will be normally stepped on.
