Home Theater System - Sell or upgrade speakers

Ok. I have a Sony HT-DDW900 HDMI switching home theater system. It has the standard 5.1 surround sound speakers (satellites and powered sub). Specs can be found here:

Now, I am NOT happy with the audio from this thing. Is it because of the crappy speakers it has? I mean, to hear anything, I have to turn it up to like 50, max is about 65-70. The sub simply sucks.

Should I sell it all, or keep the receiver and get a nice set of powered speakers? Suggestions on what I should get as well? Can only spend a couple hundred on it as well. Thanks again!

Speakers are going to be the weakest link in just about any inexpensive system.

What to do... well is it too late to return it? If you got it at circuit city, I would suggest checking out the Onkyo HTIB sets as an alternative to the Sony. The Onkyo sets aren't going to be mind blowing, but I think you get your money's worth from them. One of the stronger points for the Onkyo sets is that the receivers are pretty good. They don't have HDMI for the lower level sets, but they're pretty decent in terms of quality. They would probably serve you better down the road if you decided to tackle the speakers again, since that's still going to be the weakest link.

What do you mean by getting a pair of powered speakers? You wouldn't want to use the receiver to power the new speakers?

Do you think there's something wrong with the system as far as volume control goes? You said max was 65-70, is it louder than you'd want it at that point, or is it still lacking?

Getting new speakers would certainly be a way to go. It seems like you're not happy with the sub either, so it sounds like you'd want to replace them all pretty much. At that point, you're only left with the Sony receiver, which is probably not the kind of receiver you want at the heart of a nicer system.
