"home theater" system recommendations...

update: I found the same system that Wallyworld has for $80 less at Circuit City.
Sooo, forget about that system.

Anyone have any recommendations at decent "theater in a box" systems for <$250?
Just need: receiver, 5.1 speakers.
Preferably something available at box stores - Sears, CC, BB, Kmart, WalMart, etc.

Wallyworld
HT-DDW670T
Sony system - receiver, "cool" tall tower speakers, subwoofer, 2 digital inputs (coax and optical), 5.1 surround sound, dts, etc.

Anyone know much about the Sony systems?

This is a gift for my son for his bedroom; he wants to connect his xbox, etc.
And, I'm not dropping a fortune on an Onkyo system, like I have for the living room.

Any better recommendations in the $200-250 range?

Sorta...

He has a nice 35 or 36 inch television for the xbox in his bedroom. I was sick of tripping over xbox cables in the living room. Our school has a 5 year replacement cycle for equipment such as televisions (which are used continuously during the day.) I picked up the Sony television for him last year for $75 at school. So, while it's huge for a kid's bedroom, it's used, and was cheap.

My older son understands this: the receiver in my younger son's room is far better than any receiver I'm willing to purchase for him. That receiver goes to the older son after xmas. He's ultimately down-grading simply because he wants a subwoofer...

oh crud. I took the T off the end of that system, and was *finally* able to find more info on it,
like it's $80 cheaper at Circuit City.

So, I'm going to forget about the system from Wally World.
I'll go elsewhere.

Logitech 5500 system.. Digital/optical/direct inputs will run XBOX/DVD/PC at same time built in DTS and Dolby Digital processors and loud and clear enough to shake windows next door...

I have a Sony home theater in a box that I've had for a couple of years. I bought it when I lived in a apartment and couldn't really get too loud. I have been really happy with it. Untill I get a dedicated home theater room, I don't see the point in geting anything more elaborate. . For the money, it's hard to go wrong with the Sony.

I also agree with the other posters, don't forget to look at the Logitech systems. They are fantastic and would save you some money.

How about buying him a nice reciever and add on speakers as you can? The Onkyo SR303 AV Receiver is nice and is $180, or the Onkyo SR503 is $230, both at circuit city. In a couple of months, www.outpost.com will have polk R15s for $50 a pair shipped.

Why buy a crappy system when you can start him on a nice system he can build on?

Because his son is 14 and will not likely add onto it himself, and he (the OP) wants to limit the funds he spends on this to $250.

Onkyo s580 $274.99
-$50 PA440 coupon code
+ 10.99 shipping
----
$235.98 to your door

Free shipping if you want to add something worth $26 to your order.

Not a recommendation of the system, just pointing out another option

Thanks much...
I sent the wife to Rochester today to compare and buy the best one she could find for $250 or less.
I gave her the advice from here.

I have a Sanyo HT system that was less than $200. It's a multi-disc changer, plays DivX/Xvid, has optical inputs, etc. It doesn't sound bad at all for the money...subwoofer isn't particularly powerful but otherwise does the job. Sorry I don't have a model number, but I love the ability to put 3-6 movie backups on a single DVD for the kids - multiply that by 5 discs and they have dozens of movies available at their fingertips.

Just be sure that the system has the inputs/outputs that you need. A lot of the cheaper systems skimp on that.

Just so you know, retail stores are going to have much higher prices on some of these sets than you can find online.
