Home Theater Speakers on a PC

Some of the speakers threads in the last few days got me thinking and wondering.

Would there be any benefit to getting a full on Home Theater system for your PC, rather than 'computer' speakers? I know about super expensive ones; I'm more thinking about something like this that runs in the same approx price range as a set of high quality computer speakers.

I have an Audigy2 ZS. Could I just use some kind of converter on the digital out and hook it up to a system like this? How well would it work?

That would work and it's prolly gonna be better than almost all "PC speakers"

I've heard that Yamaha setup before. I still think you would be much better off with the Klipsch or the Logitech setup. The problem with that Yamaha is the speakers, they are just too small. 2 1/2" for the mains and 6.5" woofer. Although the Yamaha will allow for more configurations if you ever decide to use it something else besides the PC.

Actually, *cheap* HT speakers (like you get from a $200-300 "Home Theater In A Box" setup) are probably not going to beat out *good* "PC Speakers".

Certainly, though, you get what you pay for; real high-quality home theater speakers, paired with an appropriate receiver, would destroy most PC speakers. But in the same price range, you won't see too much difference between 'low-end HT' and 'midrange/high-end PC' speakers.

Someone care to give me an approx price estimate for "good" HT speakers w/ reciever, etc?

I'm asking because I'm considering making a PC the center of my home entertainment center; as in watching TV, DVDs, etc all on a PC dedicated for that purpose. The HT PC concept. 😉

But I want good sound. I do not know much about speakers and stuff, but I can tell the difference when I hear it, and distortion bugs me. I want to learn more.
