Home Theater Receivers - Question

I am looking to buy a receiver. I've used them before, but never owned one.

I have a question regarding the audio inputs. I know that, in addition to having several sets of video/audio inputs, they also usually have a couple audio-only inputs, for CD players and the like.

What I am wondering is, is there a way to select an audio-only source, but to also simultaneously display video from a different source (that normally has its own audio) at the same time? I understand that you can un/re-plug in the cables each time, but I want to know if it is possible to be selectable through the remote.

I understand that this obviously could vary between brands/models of receivers, but basically I just want to know whether it is:

* common feature, supported by most/all receivers
* some have it, some don't
* crazy idea, not supported by any receivers

I searched the web and couldn't find any info, but I might not have been looking for the right buzzwords.

Thanks for any help.

no receivers that I can think of have that capability. (it just wouldn't make any sense) But there are alternatives, such as having a audio/video selector or something along those lines.

What kind of speakers are you planning on hooking it up to?

Edit-Everything runs through my HT Receiver and I never use the TV speakers. I can change TV inputs between my VCR (yes, I still have one), DVD player, PS2 and my satellite all through my HT remote. The only other remote I need is the Direct TIVO remote to change channels.

Common feature supported by most decent receivers. (1000 bucks+)

You can select the video input/outpt regardless of the audio selection.

possibly even the lower DENON/HK models will as well, don't know...haven't keep up with all of them.

I know I could do the AV selector route, but it would be an unwieldy tack-on to a normally elegant solution (many sets of cables go in to receiver, one set comes out).

My plan/hope was to be able to listen to my satellite radio tuner while silently playing a video game.

Do you know how it might be commonly referred to, so I could recognize it in the list of features/specs? "Independent video/audio selection" or some such?

Just hook your video game up to the TV directly via the front inputs (if so equipped).

yeah I guess if you're willing to shell out the dough for an expensive one then you could most likely find one that will do it.

A lot of receivers have the ability to play an audio source and display a video source. My brother's 6 year old Yamaha has that; can just switch between on the remote.

I'd try going over to Home Theater Forum or AVS Forum to find models that can do that specifically; but I don't feel its all that uncommon.

I don't know of a specific term.

I'd suggest start selecting the receiver gems in your price range (the ones that really stand out in terms of power, inputs, quality) and then read the manual to see if it supports that feature.

Sometimes on the front it will have a "video select" or "monitor out" button, this is different than the normal input selection.

my previous JVC receiver had this feature...

On the on-screen menu (when the video output of the receiver was connected to your tv), there was an option to select the video source for each of the audio/video inputs...

my current JVC receiver (which was a step up - went from a 5.1 to 6.1 setup) doesn't have it though which isn't a big deal since my video/audio sources were all the same so I never used this feature...

I'm pretty sure my Sony receiver does that. I know for a fact that I can have a video source selected, hit one of the audio source buttons, and they'll both be illuminated. But I've never hooked anything up to the audio-only part of it (PC feeds all the audio to it, so it's on an audio/video source)

My JVC does this too.

It will display the last selected video input if you switch to an audio out. Doing this via remote means I can have any video and audio combination I want. However, if I turn the dial on the front of the receiver, it cycles through the inputs and therefore will only display the 'adjacent' video with the audio...

I think my Kenwood can do that...but I always have the option of bypassing my system for video feeds since my display has 4 inputs.
