Home Theater help

I'm aiming to stay cheap (well, I wouldn't call it aiming, I really don't have a choice 😛), but I have a chance of getting one of these receivers for almost the same price,

First, I can get this Onkyo TX-SR500 for $130

or I can get the Onkyo TX-DS575 fir $150

if anyone has any other suggestions for around these prices, please let me know. The SR500 seems more entry level, where the 575 seems like a slightly older, but better receiver. Has anyone heard either of these receivers in person?

Any help is appreciated - thanks guys! 🙂

I own an Onkyo TX-DS575X and it's a great receiver, albeit a little old. Bought it for $200 in the fs/t forums about 6 months ago.

However, yours is not the 'X' version, and I have heard about troubles with that. Go to www.audioreview.com and search for your model to see what I mean.

What other components are you planning to hook up with either one of this guys?

I have 2 Cambridge Soundworks bookshelfs (from their old MovieWorks combo, I believe they'll handle 100W RMS) along with the center from that setup. I need to get some rears and a sub, but I'm worrying about the receiver first for now...

Yeah I was looking at the TX-DS575 reviews by mistake a couple days ago and noticed those.

Do you have your heart set on Onkyo? I bet you can find similarly speced HK and Denon's in that same price range.

No, I just think Onkyo is a good entry level brand, if Denon and HK can be had for between 100-150 (used or otherwise) then I'd be open to suggestions

www.jandr.com has the Onkyo TX-SR502 refurb for $149, that's 2 model years newer than the 500.

That's what I'd get for a budget under $200.

link for the lazy

Wow, great price for a nice receiver... is refurb reliable enough do you think? And I'm only looking for a 5.1 setup, can I get that with a 6.1 receiver like the 502?

Yes. You just set it to 5.1 instead of 6.1.

Referb from Onkyo is very reliable.

Hm, shipping for it puts me over my budget though 😱

I want to wait until I save some more money so I can get what I want, but I'm seeing some really good deals around... I just need to be patient 😛

The Onkyo 502 is an Onkyo factory refurb, tested by Onkyo. It comes with a 1-year Onkyo warranty, so it's safer than buying used.

Well, after reading all of the bad things about the 575, I think I'm going to have to pass on that one 🙂 Are there any other brands/models someone would recommend for the same price?

God I'm not sure personally I'm a fan of H/K receivers and HarmanKardon sells refurbed models of theirs on ebay from H/K direct. But even the AVR-230 (the receiver I have and love) is over your price range. Frankly I would suggest saving up a little bit more and then spending around $250 because frankly I think $150 is way too low of a budget.
