Home theater help, speaker positioning.

So, the tweeters are supposed to be mounted at ear level, right? What's ear level? I'm thinking about 48 inches off the ground.

And what about actual positioning? How far apart should they be in the front and rear in a room about 14X15?

well, you'd probably want to make an equilateral triangle between you and your speakers.

so figure out how far away you are from your tv, and make a triangle based on that sitting position

48 inches sounds about right...remember, it's at ear level when you're sitting on your couch or whatever.

I think it would be hard for us to tell you "exactly" what to do, as it depends on how your room is laid out and other factors. Just get ready to do some lifting, and just keep moving them until they sound "right" to you.

Too bad my couch is right against the wall, I'm going to have a hard time with the rear placement.

There's additional rule in regard to speaker's location with respect to wall. They must at the same distance to side walls (if left speaker is 3 ft from left wall, right speaker should be in the same distance from the right wall). And their distance to the rear wall is a proportion (1/3, 2/3, darn it, don't remember it dude) to their distance to the side walls. If the speaker is rear-ported, you should adjust so that the low frequency doesn't sound boomy.

Sit in your favorite listening position. Measure distance between ear and floor.

I suppose that golden rule or whatever is optimal for critical stereo listening, but that would mean I would need to put my mains about 6' from the wall behind them!

And what about multi-channel? 5.1? 6.1? 7.1?
