I'm being offered one for free, so i'd like opinions on which to take. Please don't say "they both suck, get brand XYZ instead" unless you plan to give me one for free also.

I have the VR-606, aside for a couple odd issues (it's frozen up completely on two occasions, had to cold reset it) it's been pretty good.

Yamaha for sure, based on brand. I didn't research the differences in the models.

Yes, and reputation comes from what? That's what I thought.

Yamaha is the world largest musical instrument maker. Everything that they make, they will try to reproduce the sound of those instrument through their electronics. Yahama has the best and most realistic DSP for movie and also music (though a little high on the musical side). I'm a Denon guy, but if I have to choose between the two, get the Yamaha.

Yamaha makes great gear....even the Klipsch guys (talking the Classic series stuff like Cornwalls and Fortes) like them

I have a Yamaha RX-V1050 it's old, but it drives my Quartets (Klipsch) nicely and loud if I want. The max I have had hooked up is Quartets, Academy (which I sold like a dumbA*S) and a pair of PSB 300i's.

Now I also had a system comprised of:
main amp: Rotel RB980BX (120x2)

center/surround amp: RB956BX (about 75x3)

tuner: RT940AX

preamp/processor: Rotel RSP960BX

CD/LD: Marantz CC65SE

Def Tech BP20's BP10's and CLR1000

Yamaha makes great everything. Awesome motorcycles, wonderful auto engines, boat motors, computer parts, guitars, amps, and especially pianos. I've never ever had a problem with my Kenwood reciever, they make a good product. But I'd take the Yamaha.

not that # of posts to google is indicitive of performace...but that kenwood had under 10, the yamaha 80 posts.

Neither really got bashed as far as I can tell, but I'd pick the Yamaha.

I do have a Kenwood Excelsion 858 in my dash though....they make great car stereos. I had a Kenwood 8005? (800something) in my 1966 mustang too, CD's weren't really common then (80's) and it was a double knob radio, but had all digital tuning, dolby C, etc....offered a 20-20000 Hz frequency response with the right tape media.
