Getting to the point pretty soon where I need to pick out paint and carpet colors. I'm thinking of getting medium brown plush carpet and painting the screen wall black. Not sure beyond that. Thoughts?

What are you doing for trim? What furniture are you thinking of doing (can you get something that compliments in color)? Where are your getting your acoustic treatments?

Do you want the place to be a true cave or do you want some color/brightness in there?

Haven't really thought about trim yet. I know it tends to look funny if you paint a ceiling and don't add crown molding, so I'm open to adding that. I figure we'll just put in standard baseboard trim as well.

For furniture, it'll be dark brown recliners eventually. Hoping to find a good deal now that Berkline is going out of business.

Hadn't thought about acoustic treatments. My wife would probably prefer these to be minimal, since they "look weird." She'll probably try to fight me on painting the room entirely dark (ex. black and very dark brown/red), so a little color will probably be a good compromise.

Generally in a home theater, the acoustical treatment goes into the wall and you cover them with acoustical fabric of the color you want instead of drywalling.

Also, acoustic treatments should be the first thing figured out when planning a home theater, not the last. This is so that you can plan bass traps within a second row riser, and hide all of the acoustical treatment within the walls so that nobody knows about them. Otherwise, I have known people to cut away the pre-existing dry-wall very carefully and insert acoustical treatments into the framing and flush with the surrounding drywall, and then carefully place fabric to cover the treatments. Once the acoustics are taken care of and "out of sight out of mind" your movie watching experience will be superior.

Common treatments used are linacoustic, Quest acoustic products, Dow fiberglass products, Rockwool, Acoustical cotton, etc.

For colors, as long as they are on the warmer/darker portion of the color wheel you should be fine. Rich browns, reds, darker grays, etc. Of course your screen wall could comprise a dark curtain on rails so that it could double as a screen masking system.

In the ultra-uber high end sure. But for most DIY's some superchuncks for bass traps and panels to reduce reflections will work just fine and it's just a lot easier to reprovision the room at a later date should you want/need to.

Here's what my setup looks like.

I did superchunks in the front corners:

I could use some more in the rear as I can hear it filling up a bit back there...but it's not terrible. I could also use a little more acoustic panels on the back wall as there a bit of reflection too...but again it's not terrible. The room is fairly "dead" without being an anechoic chamber.

It's cozy and comfortable and my DIY treatments ran about $150.

Treatment panels can either be a contrast to your wall color like I chose or they can compliment. So long as they in symetry with each other you'll forget they are there after a few days.

I went with green walls, brown carpet and dark red seating.
