Home theater advice needed.

My current setup is as follows:

27" Sansui TV with 1x audio-out, 2x RCA-in, 1x S-video-in.

Pioneer HT-2550 5.1 system with 2x coaxial digital-in, 1x optical digital-in, 2x RCA audio-in, 1x RCA audio-out **No video input or output** It has digital, pro-logic II, and DTS decoders.

PS2 (Slim) hooked up to TV via S-video and to receiver via Optical Digital.

-------------

The HT system (got it for x-mas) also came with a DVD player. Right now I use my PS2 as my primary DVD player as well, but I can't seem to get it to output DTS signals to my receiver (the option is grayed out even when DTS is selected on the DVD itself).

The DVD player has coaxial digital out, so I could still use the digital cable from my PS2, but I only have one s-video input to work with. I assume it would be in my best interest to have the DVD player use the s-video if I went that route, but is it worth giving up the s-video output from my games? Or should I just leave my system as-is and continue using my PS2 as my DVD player as well?

You can get a switch for those two inputs or you can just swap them out each time, I would try and use s-video for both of them.

Does the new DVD player work for passing DTS to your receiver then?

I haven't tested it, but there's no reason it shouldn't. I did some research on the PS2 issue and it's apparently fairly common. 😕

Hmm...I hadn't thought of that...I don't want to swap out every time, though.

Yeah, you could certainly get a switch. That would probably be around $20.

Before you do that, it might be a good idea to see if you can tell the difference between composite and s-video from the sources on your tv.

A switch sounds like a decent idea. I'd hate to go with composite on either...it's the principle of the thing! 😉

I understand

the ps2 is kind of a pain to get dts working on it. you have to put in the dvd, go to the ps2 dvd menu press stop. then go see if you can turn dts on, if not you may need to stop again, select dts on the dvd itself or some combination, its a pain and to whoever designed it that way, i hate you.

use your real dvd player for DVDS to save yourself the hassle, and get a $20 switchbox that has s-video, it is worth the cost to be able to hook up a bunch of things through s-vid.

Yeah, I tried that whole process and, while it let me select DTS, it greyed out again when I played the movie and it didn't output DTS to the receiver (the receiver has an indicator light that comes on when receiving DTS). :|

oh yeah, the best switchbox for the money right now is the gamestop one

http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=801888

use the store availability to see if your local store has it. it has component, s-vid, and composite inputs. and even has network cable input also, pretty nice for $20. i hear it is only good for hdtv 480p signals, not 720p or 1080i, so it is ok for ps2, xbox, gamecube hookup by component, but i'd still throw the xbox 360 directly to the TV component input if you can.

That does not seem to be the higher end box you are talking about. Pelican makes two switchboxes and the one with component and cat5 is much more expensive.

yeah the description is bad, it has all the stuff I listed, believe it or not. the pelican one has a lot more inputs though, this one only has 3 main inputs and one extra that only has composite I think, but 3 is enough for what I use it for.

just looked at it, it has 3 main inputs (with component, s-vid, composite, rca, network, etc) and one front panel input that has s-vid, composite, and rca)

gamestop should put a picture of the back of the thing on the site.

the more expensive pelican one has optical input also, but my receiver has a ton of optical inputs so I just plug my junk in that way, although it would be cool to have everything switch over with one push of a button.

I would consider buying the pelican one but i hear it also can't do 720p and 1080i, so it is kind of pointless. it costs around $200 to get a high quality component cable switcher that can handle the hdtv resolutions

You own one of the gamestop ones?

YES! how else would i know it has all that crap?

thing is if you order it online I have no idea what you will get, they may have an older model that doesn't have all those features, if you need one try the store availability and check your local store, worked for me.

Does it automatically select a source or do you have to actually hit a switch every time you want to change something?

Oh, and out of curiosity what do you have hooked up to yours?

Here is another pelican system selector...I picked up two weeks ago at circuit city for $17.99 but looks like it is back to its regular price of $24.99

I used my own cables as the ones that come with it are those standard skinny ones. Using it for my PS2 and XBOX360...

How many and what kinds of cables come with it?

it comes with a set of component cables and another set that has S-Video and composite connections (video and audio)...they connect the selector box to the TV.
