I'm getting phone, cable and internet service over a fiber connection. It comes into the house in the corner of the basement where all kinds of things like my electrical box are situated. The first device once in the house is an ethernet switch that splits the connection to the set-top boxes for the TV, the connection for the phone, and also my wireless router (Netgear 614 I think). From the wireless router I have a bunch of things connected... wired and wireless I generally have no problems with the wired connections. About once a month or so the router seems to need to be reset by unplugging the power.
The wireless connection is a different story and I'm not very satisfied with it. I've got a couple of wired routers and was wondering if the following setup is feasible/possible. I'd like to replace the wireless router with a wired one, and then move the wireless router upstairs, connecting it to the wired router. I'm sure there's a networking name for what I want to do, but I'd like to have the wired router provide the IP addresses, and have the wireless router just act as a way to connect to the network. So a device connecting to the wireless router would get it's IP from the wired router and still be able to see the other devices on my home network.
By moving the wireless router away from the electrical box and closer to where the wireless devices are likely to be, I'm hoping for a more satisfactory wireless experience, but I don't want to mess up what's already there if this isn't feasible!
Thanks!
