I'm looking to add a home security system to my WHS2011 server. Anyone recommend an inexpensive camera's to add and software?

Indoor and Outdoor (wired or wireless)

I have one of these mounted over the baby's crib:

I just set up a static IP on it and port forwarding on my router. I wrote a simple Android client for my Transformer that connects to it, streams motion JPEG, and allows screen swipes to rotate the camera. Now I can spy on the baby when I am at work. 🙂

My client software was mostly as a learning project. There are a lot of clients already available, and can manage multiple cameras.

The camera also has a web interface where you can view the camera's output in your browser.

I'm currently conceptualizing a security camera installation at my house. Basically just gonna be a couple of PoE IP cameras connected to Zoneminder. I'm running Zoneminder in Linux, though.

I have two of those (cheaper if you buy as a set) and they are very good for the money.

They have been superceeded by the FI8910W.

I also like my TrendNet IP422W which has been superceeded by the 602N model.

For software I use Live Cam Pro on my iPhone or just the camera's built in GUI. Mostly I am using my iPhone so have no need to upgrade the PC software.

i just set up 4 cameras over memorial day weekend. 3 Foscam FW8910W mentioned above (2 inside the house, 1 inside garage), and 1 Agasio A622W at the front door.

I also set up Blue Iris to monitor the cameras. It’s a $50 software that works really well. I’m on the last days of the free 15 day trial and will purchase this weekend.

Right now I have Blue Iris running on my main computer. I’m going to see if I can get my WHS V1 server to run it instead but its an old AMD A64 machine.

I also use Live Cams Pro on the iphone to view and control the cameras from the outside. When I'm at work I connect to my computer at home thru the Blue Iris web server and can view cameras and past recordings. everything is pretty slick.

only draw back is the cheap cameras are 640x480...

640x480 (VGA) is adequate for home monitoring and wireless friendly.

Going to larger formats is a much higher investment across the board and a lot of times not needed.

Larger formats do open up facial recognition and license plate rendering.

wireless works but on these cheap cameras they are not reliable. i hard wired most of mine. on the one that i had to go wireless, i set up a spare linksys router with dd-wrt to be a wireless bridge, and hardwired the camera to that instead of relying on the camera's own wifi.

also, even though they're wireless, you still have to plug them in. they all come with stupidly short power cords. i extended all of them with 14ga speaker wire. everything working fine so far.

my front camera caught a suspicious guy coming up to my front door a couple of hours ago. i called the roaming security guard and gave him the description of the guy. turns out he was a plumber leaving business cards, which is not allowed according to the security guard.

we had a few break-ins in our neighborhood. one two weeks ago that was too close for comfort. the peace of mind is well worth the small investment of the cameras

i wonder now if i can get a discount on my home insurance...

you have a lot of coincidence here.

you should also have known what was allowed without having to ask a security guard.

I do agree a few monitored cameras are great. I use them mostly to check on my pets.
