HOME SECURITY SYSTEM: Which is the best?

I don't know much about security systems for home, but i feel we need one. Do you guys have a recommendation on which seucurity system to get?

What is your price range, and what features do you want? You can get any decent basic home security system for several hundred because they want to nail you on monthly monitoring fees. ADT, Brinks, Honeywell are all well known names.

There are things you can do to prevent break-in like adding bright outdoor lighting, use deadbolt locks that require key from both sides, keep bushes and plants from covering 1st floor windows. Or get a dog.

ADT does a good job. Remember, there is room to bargain for a good deal, they want that monthly fee, not a stupid little setup fee.

Will hear the slightest noise and check it out, will work if the power is out, scare off would be threats, and can protect till the police gets there.

none. I've read several interviews with experienced burglers and they all say the same thing: They don't care about that, because they're in and out before the security system can get the cops there.

I am mainly interested in one because i have pets. And dont want some fire in my apartment while im gone and having them all roast. With a security system atleast the fire department would come.

We had an ADT system for 3 yrs. After the initial 1 yr., they started jacking the monthly rates up every year. Recently, due to a high number of city-wide false alarms, the local police decided they will no longer respond to an unverified alarm.
A couple of fellows came around the other day and offered to upgrade our system. It comes with 2-way voice to communicate with the alarm company so they call you and verify an alarm event. It also came with a cell-pnone system, so in case the phones are out, (or wire gets cut) the system continues to work, and a smoke detector that goes directly to the fire department. In all, we got about $1500. worth of equipment at no charge, no installation, and reduced our monthly cost by almost $15./month for monitoring as a "demo-home" in the neighborhood. They were able to utilize much of our existing equipment, like door sensors and motion sensor, so we were able to apply what those would have cost to other equipment, like another motion sensor, the smoke detector (usually extra cost) and the cell phone tie-in (also usually an add-on)
They have some web-specials too:
