Obviously, some ATOT'ers were home school and turned out alright...

but I think you guys were the exception

poor kid :( He should go into academia since his social skills won't get him too far.

I don't know about that. If people home school their kids properly, they'll probably push to get them into other things outside the home, like local sports clubs and stuff like that and you'll have just as well-adjusted kids as someone who sends their kids to public/private school.

I know plenty of people who are very socially awkward who went to public or private school.

Ha, I don't think home schooling is the only reason this guy is mentally retarded.

This kid pisses me off. Not because he's awkward, not because he's rude, not because he's antisocial, not because he looks funny, not because he's slow and probably underdeveloped in other subjects in life, not because he's on tv, not because he's probably a spoiled rich kid who could afford home schooling, not because of all the attention,

but because knowing my luck, he's going to get more chicks than I do.

And I'm perfectly normal.

Holy sh*t, i couldn't get past the first sentence without cringing. Had to close it afterwards.

Home schooling is probably a smaller part of a bigger issue. Why would a parent withdraw them from a public/private in the first place? One reason may be that they want to isolate the kid and mould him/her into their specific vision with no outside influence, as in this case. Since socialization is about influence, there be the problem.

Edit: Un-generalized home schooling a bit.

It's not a rule that all home-schooled kids will be socially awkward, but I'd say it's more likely they will be. I worked at a museum for about 2 years during / after highschool, and you could always tell (or at least strongly guess) when a kid was home-schooled. Your typical 12 year old kid won't throw a temper tantrum or be scared to talk to you...

For the love of god I hope not. You watched the video right? This kid has no chance IMO, and the thing is he probably won't mind.

It was a youtube comment. I'm pretty sure I've had more girl "contact" today then he will get his whole life.

Is that you TridentBoy?

I know home schooled kids like that, but I also know some of them who are fairly well adjusted, but still not exactly normal.

It's like watching To Catch a Predator...you know there's someone out there who's less capable than you are - whether it be stupidity, being a pedophile, or being socially retarded.

Just like with public and private schools, it depends on the quality of the parents and the teachers. I knew a home-schooling family in my old neighborhood and the kids were very well adjusted and did very well socially. There's another family in my son's martial arts class and those kids seem very well adjusted and more than socially capable as well.

There's nothing wrong with home-schooling when done right. This one dorky kid does not reflect the entire home-schooling world anymore than Tim Tebow does.

Damn. Some people just should not be on Live TV. He obviously was all flustered by the Camera. Quite likely due to lack of Social Skills, but even with Social Skills some get stage fright.

Our home and private schooling had very obvious detrimental effects on my and my twin brother's social skills. It has taken us years of independence to become a little more normal but, at 28, I like the balance now. He doesn't seem to have the insecurities we had and it seems to give him a rude demeanor.

I agree home schooling by itself isnt the problem.
If the quality of public vs. home education is any indicator, those kids probably have a lot more time to go out and play.
Those parents should be sending them outside to get into sports and stuff. But maybe they dont. Maybe they shelter them from everything they dont like, not just public education.

You felt the need to mention that on Youtube as well apparently...

It's good for ratings to keep up stereotypes.
"Wow, awesome, a smart kid who's really awkward! It's television gold! Keep the camera on him, and don't cut away for any reason."

And it's quite possible that his parents think he's absolutely perfect in every way, and love to receive some attention through him on national TV.

I was homeschooled. It was weird at first when I went back to high school, but it was like nothing to break through. That kid is just fucking weird.

I was homeschooled 4th grade through 12th. Started college immediately, I didn't have any social skills issues whatsoever. Lived out in the boonies, main saving from homeschooling was not driving the 40miles one way to school every day. There were no other houses in walking distance of ours, and I guess it was within biking distance, but that was a 8mile one way ride. So yeah i spent most of my days on the computer when i finished classes and homework. It wasn't easy stuff. I came out with a 3.4GPA, but from the 10-12th grade I routinely spent 8AM-5PM doing the DVD classes, with one hour for lunch, then would take me about 4-6 hours for homework, especially when I took planar geometry and physics. It gave me time to build my first computer at age 13, and start webhosting at 15. But again, I was not, and still am not, anti social. Even though I had zilch sociality when I was a kid. It's not that difficult to get yourself "social". Some people just take longer than others. Forcing kids out into it doesn't make it any better. That's like telling a guy that's afraid of heights to go up a 300ft. tall Silo. And everyone mentioning sports clubs and all that, ok maybe you enjoyed that as a kid, doesn't mean everyone does. I for one *hated* organized sports, I hated clubs, camping, ect. Now I love the outdoors. I love to go mow the lawn, rake the leaves, go for a bikeride, ect. I loved to play baseball, badmitton, and kickball with my friends on the 3rd saturday of every month. But I hated clubs. Why? I hate when something is *required* of me, that i find fun. Because when you take something I enjoy, it ceases to be fun anymore. Think a gynecologist enjoys every single woman that spreads her legs :p.

It's possible that his parents decided to home school him because he was getting his ass kicked every day in public school.

Hell, I probably would have taken his lunch money or something.
