Home remodeling

So to continue from my previous post regarding HVAC, I am likely to move back to my old house.

My old house has been a rental for almost two years. It is mainly carpet with title kitchen floor. So far it has not be in great shape as the tenants have pets and two young kids.

If moving back to that house, we will need to get many things replaced..

1. Replace 1300 to 1400 sq ft of carpet (haven't measure it) with hard wood floor.

2. Repaint the interior of the house (it is a 1670 sq house).

3. Replaced all 13 windows with faux wood blinds. (currently have all windows with roman blinds).

4. Lastly replaced the old kitchen counter top with either quartz or granite.

We want it all done within a month or month and a half if possible. Since we could get everything from Homdepot, has anyone has any experiencing with using Homedepot for all or some of the above tasks? Who dose Homdepot use to do them? Do they use their own people or hired someone?

Wife and in-laws wants warranty so they don't want me and my friends to do the job..

I am looking at hiring a contractor to do them too, if it would be cheaper. This is in NW Austin, TX

Thanks in advance!

When you say replace 13 windows with faux wood blinds, I'm guessing you mean the window coverings only?

Here in CA, Homedepot uses subcontractors for all of their work. I've personally seen them do some pretty good work, but a quick web search will reveal an extensive list of disasters they've created. I guess you take your chances that you get good people. You're going to have the same issue with a contractor. Texas doesn't licence general contractors, which doesn't leave you a lot of recourse if they screw up your house. My son moved to Texas a few years ago, and he's still appalled at some of the work he sees. I walked through a multi million dollar house he was working on in Austin, and couldn't believe some of the things they were doing. There were fundamental flaws in the exterior waterproofing details that guaranteed failure. The only one worried about it was my son, and his boss wasn't interested in hearing about it.
I'll ask my son if he knows anyone in the area that's worth hiring.

home depot contractors are inconsistent.

With that said, it would be tough for them to screw up floor and blinds. I imagine they do so much of that you should find references easy

Ouch. That doesn't give me much hope.

I am asking neighbors but most have not done anything to their home so they have no reference as well.

I will see if I can try angieslist. But i think that I have to pay to get to see things there..

Send me a pm if you can't find anyone, I might have another option for you.

Thanks Greenman. I will have two contractors coming to get measurements and quotes. They have good reviews on yelp, handy and gosmith.. Will pm you if they don't work out to be good.

Update to this project.

So after having three contractors came and gave me a quote, one of them had made a suggestion to me that he could charge less if I can supply the flooring, instead of him contacting his suppliers if I can find a cheaper source.

The most online floor sellers have terrible reviews, but their prices are great.

For example..

https://www.builddirect.com/p/Vanier-Maple-Forest-Collection--15192817

It is over $3.29 at HP or Lowes for similar color and size as it is 6.5" wide.

Has anyone had experience ordering hardwood flooring through online sites?

Yes, I bought both of my new wood floors online: (engineered 5" maple)http://www.weshipfloors.com/flooring/maple-suede-916-x-5 and my kitchen / dining / hallway (3/4" x 3" brazilian Koa) http://www.brazilianhardwood.com/products/flooring/braziliankoa/

The former was cheaper, but board lengths were shorter. The finish appears white when it scratches a certain way as well. Overall it is fine.

The latter seems to be real nice stuff, but since you want this done so fast you might not want actual hardwood but engineered or something different so that things don't get goofy because you didn't acclimate the wood. The onus will by far be on you to pick the correct material and make sure it is installed correctly. I made the assumption that trying to get a warranty action on any floor would be impossible unless I bought directly from an installer. That was just nuts for me because their stuff was 2-3x the price.

Definitely take advantage of the online places samples!

I ordered around a thousand square feet of bamboo for my house. Great flooring, great price, and not one single piece was damaged or flawed.
