TextI haven't kept up with home audio equipment in 8 years but the GF wants us to get a new receiver for Xmas and I'm all for it. Our pricerange is about $600 but I could bump it a little if it's worth it.

Back when I sold audio equipment I used to like Denon and Yamaha. The first one that caught my eye was this receiver..

Yamaha RX-N600


It's network capable which I was surprised to find. Sounds cool...

Network Receiver: The Yamaha RX-N600 Network A/V Receiver is capable of playing MP3, WMA, and WAV music from up to 4 PCs, using a LAN (local area network) and Windows Media Connect technology ver.2 or better. In addition, the receiver can be used as a client for Yamaha's MusicCAST home music server. It can seamlessly integrate with the MCX-2000 digital audio server within your LAN. Using the vTuner Internet radio station database service, you can also locate and listen to any of the thousands of Internet radio stations, when connected to a broadband Internet connection. The receiver has an RJ-45 jack on the rear panel for connecting to your LAN, and a USB Type A jack on the front panel which will accommodate USB flash drives and portable USB music players.

Anyone got some thoughts on this or other suggestions?
 
I have a Harmon Kardon and love it.

What speakers are you going to match them up with? What are you going to use it for? Home theater? Stereo music?

It's basically a RX-V559/HTR-5950 6.1 Receivers...there are 7.1 and more features now in the Yamaha line...they have a product comparer at www.yamaha.com

I went with a HTR-5960 recently. About $350 shipped.

However; if you need/want the network capabilities it's not a terrible unit.

The current Yamaha products are YDS-10 iPod adapter capable though so can play off a music device...just not over a network.

I have some old Infinity speakers that are stil pretty nice and a Phillips CD player. I'll be using it for music, movies, Wii and PS3 games.

I don't know what sites to find reviews and comparisons at if you have any suggestions.

It's hard to go wrong with electronics from reputable brands... I would just look at the kind of inputs/ouputs they have and get the best one possible within your price range for this kind of a setup.

Yoyoyohowsdajello might have more detailed information though, he'll chime in soon enough, probably once he wakes up 😛

Do you have a list of needs or wants? There are good receivers from all the major brands (Denon, Yamaha, Onkyo, H&K, etc) at all different price points. Are you trying to stay in the $600 range?

Is this for movies and music? What's the rest of your system like?
