Home premium really necessary for me?

Well, am been pondering this for a little while now. The only major diff's are the Aero interface and the media center, correct?

Well, as I tend to overclock my GPU's I would not really want to be running at 3D clocks all the time, hence I am not sure Aero wuld be a good idea - unless there is some kind of low power 3d more and high power 3d mode?

As for the media center, I doubt I would use it for naything. I don't use my pecia as a media center, and if I listen to music, it's using winamp playing the mp3's I have ripped from my CD collection.

Premium just seems to add more bloat than is needed.

And also, I found a site offering a side by side comparison of the interfaces and they did not look that much different, although I am sure Aero probably has some extra built-in functionality besides it's looks.

Are there any other reasons why Premium would be better than Basic?

I have 2 systems currently running Vista.

My desktop is running Home Premium with all the bells and whistles turned on.

My laptop, which is older, is running Home Basic which of course means no Aero and etc....

I don't miss the bells and whistles on my laptop. That machine is pretty much just an email, internet and work remotely when I have to system. If that is all you need then I wouldn't pay the extra $$ for Premium.

Well, I mostly use my system for gaming.

Although I just had a thought - I will probably need IIS down the line as I am a web developer and wheras it has been a while since I have done any development work at home, I might need to start doing it again soon.

Does IIS run on Basic? I imagine not. Hell, probably not even Premium - probably going to need Business, with any bloat that that entails.

I really just didn't want more bloatware from MS than was necessary...

I think you really should go with Home Premium. Aero can always be disabled and it's really not that much more money.

Just did some googling - does come with home premium too - only allows 3 connections, but that is fine for basic development purposes.

So guess it will be Premium for me.

Now its just a question of when to upgrade. I know most things are not entirely stable gaming-wise with Vista right now... but I really am keen to have a good play with it. I think mostly because I am just plain sick of the look of XP.

How many different visual themes does vista have?
